Democrats want to raise what now?
Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong is drawing renewed attention after defending her progressive platform during a national television interview while responding to criticism from Republicans.
Hong, a self-described democratic socialist, appeared Sunday on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday,” where host Chris Stirewalt asked how she would respond if Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany labeled her “a radical activist” during the campaign.
Rather than address the criticism directly, Hong shifted the discussion to economic issues, arguing that America’s current federal minimum wage is the real problem facing voters.
“What’s radical is that we still have a $7.25 minimum wage,” Hong said during the interview.
She argued that many Wisconsin residents continue to struggle with access to affordable health care. Hong said her campaign is focused on policies she believes will improve the lives of working families across the state.
According to Hong, voters she has met while campaigning are most concerned about wages, health care costs, and economic security.
The interview comes as Hong continues to hold a commanding lead in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary.
A recent Marquette University Law School poll found Hong leading the Democratic field with 38% support. Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes placed second at 16%, while Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley followed with 7%.
Hong’s rise reflects the growing influence of progressive candidates within today’s Democratic Party. Over the past several election cycles, several candidates aligned with democratic socialist ideas have defeated more established Democrats in high-profile primaries.
Among the best-known examples are New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, both of whom have become prominent voices for the party’s progressive wing.
Republicans, however, continue to argue that the Democratic Party is embracing policies that move it further to the left.
Following Hong’s television appearance, Congressman Tom Tiffany’s campaign issued a statement criticizing the groups and individuals she has campaigned alongside.
In the statement, Tiffany said Hong had chosen to associate with activists who have made controversial statements about the United States, expressed support for communist ideology, and promoted extreme anti-capitalist views.
The exchange underscores the sharp political divide likely to dominate Wisconsin’s governor’s race as both parties attempt to define the issues that matter most to voters.
Republicans are expected to focus on concerns about the direction of the Democratic Party and the growing influence of democratic socialist policies, while Democrats continue emphasizing economic issues such as wages, health care affordability, and the cost of living.
With Wisconsin expected to remain one of the nation’s most competitive political battlegrounds, the governor’s race will likely receive significant national attention in the months ahead as both parties compete for independent and undecided voters.
