While media attention is declining for Biden, it doesn’t change the fact that he is severely impaired.
During President Biden’s sole public event of the week on Thursday, he appeared visibly uncertain about his next steps. After celebrating the Texas Rangers’ World Series victory at the White House, Biden was seen needing assistance from an emcee to exit the event. He had just received a personalized Rangers jersey and cowboy boots, and seemed unsure of the protocol once the ceremony concluded.
The 81-year-old president, who officially ended his campaign for a second term on July 21 amidst growing concerns from fellow Democrats about his cognitive fitness, insists that he is still capable of serving through January 20. Despite his assertion, his public schedule remains notably sparse, raising questions about his readiness to lead.
At the event, Biden’s confusion was evident as he asked, “All right, what am I doing now?” after the presentation of gifts. He humorously questioned whether a military aide was “stealing my jersey” before standing awkwardly and gesturing for direction. The emcee eventually guided him by announcing, “Distinguished guests, please stay in your seats as the president leaves,” leading Biden to leave with a somewhat awkward faux-jog and a military-style salute to the team.
The uncertainty surrounding Biden’s ability to effectively fulfill his duties as president has been a topic of significant discussion. Leading Republicans, alongside some Democrats, have voiced strong concerns. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) called for Biden’s immediate resignation, stating, “If Biden isn’t fit to run for president, he isn’t fit to remain the president.” Similarly, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) questioned Biden’s judgment regarding his health and capacity to make critical decisions, highlighting the public’s need to trust in the president’s ability to lead.
Biden’s public engagements have been minimal, with no events scheduled for the earlier part of the week and a private visit to his Wilmington campaign headquarters planned for Thursday evening. He will then retreat to his vacation home for an extended weekend.
The president’s departure from the Democratic nomination came after intense pressure following a poorly received debate performance against former President Donald Trump on June 27, where Biden’s confusion was widely noted. In the wake of his withdrawal, Vice President Kamala Harris has gained traction in polling, currently leading Trump according to RealClearPolitics. However, Harris has yet to face significant scrutiny, with no interviews conducted since taking over as the party’s nominee, leaving many questions about her policies and record unaddressed.
Despite the criticism, Biden’s aides continue to defend his competency, with press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and his physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, maintaining that his mental acuity is sound and he remains fit to serve.
