Canada is not happy.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently vowed that Canada would not back down in the face of President Trump’s threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. In a statement made Friday while speaking to the advisory council on Canada-U.S. relations, Trudeau emphasized that his government would stand firm against any tariffs, stating, “If tariffs are imposed, we will respond accordingly.” He further added, “We won’t back down until these tariffs are removed. Everything is on the table.”
This latest round of tariff threats comes after Trump once again floated the idea of imposing a 25% tariff on both Canada and Mexico. The former U.S. president had previously suggested such measures back in late 2024, following his re-election bid. During a recent interview, Trump criticized both nations, accusing them of unfair trade practices and saying, “Mexico and Canada have played fair with us on trade. They have treated us very badly.” He also pointed to issues like the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. and the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border as further justification for his stance.
The trade dispute between Canada and the U.S. isn’t new. Trump, during his presidency, had previously clashed with Canadian leaders, even mocking Trudeau and suggesting that Canada should be the 51st state. Despite these tensions, the two nations have a long-standing trade relationship, with Canada and Mexico among the U.S.’s largest trading partners.
Experts have warned that while tariffs may sound like a way to address trade imbalances, they could end up hurting American consumers, who would face higher prices on many goods. Furthermore, a prolonged trade war could lead to economic damage not just in the U.S. but across North America. The situation remains volatile, with both sides digging in their heels ahead of upcoming elections in both Canada and the U.S.
