Dem Mayor Leaks Secret Trump Conversation

Here’s what happened.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser recently shared that her meeting with President-elect Donald Trump went well, highlighting their mutual commitment to improving the nation’s capital. Despite their tense past, particularly during the 2020 riots following the George Floyd tragedy, Bowser said they found common ground on a number of issues, including federal infrastructure and public spaces.

“We both want Washington, D.C. to be the most beautiful and vibrant city in the world, reflecting the strength of our nation,” Bowser said. This signals a shift from the mayor’s previous rhetoric, which often clashed with the Trump administration, especially over handling the protests and riots that engulfed the city in 2020.

Bowser emphasized that the meeting focused on potential areas of collaboration between the federal government and local leadership, particularly related to federal buildings, parks, and revitalizing underused spaces. She expressed optimism about working together with President Trump during his second term, hoping to support a successful inauguration on January 20.

This reconciliation is in stark contrast to their earlier differences. In 2020, Bowser, a Democrat, famously designated a portion of a street near the White House as “Black Lives Matter Plaza” after protesters had defaced the area with slogans like “Defund the Police.” At the time, Bowser clashed with Trump over his use of federal law enforcement to manage the unrest.

One of the ongoing issues D.C. faces is rising crime. In recent years, violent crime has surged in the city, reaching alarming levels. In fact, D.C. recorded the largest increase in violent crime between 2022 and 2023 of any major U.S. city. Carjackings and violent assaults have become so frequent that even congressional staffers have become victims of these crimes. Just this year, a Texas congressional aide was carjacked at gunpoint during a morning commute.

President Trump has promised to take action to address these growing concerns. On the campaign trail, he pledged to restore safety to cities like D.C. that he believes have deteriorated under progressive leadership. “We will rebuild our cities, including Washington D.C., which has become dangerous and mismanaged under current leadership. We’ll make them safe, clean, and beautiful again,” Trump declared at a rally in New York.

In recent months, however, D.C. officials have pointed to positive developments in crime reduction. Police data from 2024 shows a significant drop in violent crime compared to last year, with homicides down 32%, violent crime down 35%, and overall crime decreasing by 15%. Police Chief Pamela Smith attributed part of this success to the increased use of technology, including more CCTV cameras throughout the city, and to a new crime bill passed earlier this year that strengthened police powers and made it easier for judges to order pretrial detention for violent offenders.

This reduction in crime marks a notable turnaround after years of surging violence, but it also highlights the challenges ahead for D.C. leaders and their ability to maintain safety in a city struggling with both crime and political tensions. Trump’s focus on law and order and Bowser’s recent shift toward cooperation may signal that, despite their differences, both sides recognize the need to make Washington D.C. a safer place for its residents and the millions who visit annually.
