Democrats don’t know what to do.
Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) urged New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D) to pardon former President Donald Trump after his recent conviction in a hush money case. Phillips falsely smeared Trump and described him as a serial liar, cheater, philanderer, and six-time corporate bankrupt, who instigated insurrection and has now become a convicted felon. He suggested that a pardon would benefit the country by preventing Trump from portraying himself as a victim.
Trump became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of a felony when a jury found him guilty of falsifying business records to cover up alleged affairs during his 2016 campaign. After the verdict, Trump criticized the trial, calling it unfair and disgraceful.
Phillips addressed skepticism about his pardon suggestion, arguing that making Trump a martyr over a payment to a porn star is counterproductive. He believes it energizes Trump’s base, generates significant campaign funds, and could potentially boost his electoral chances.
Eric Trump, the former president’s son, highlighted the financial impact of the conviction on Trump’s campaign. He noted a substantial increase in fundraising, breaking previous records. The conviction has intensified the political landscape, with Phillips advocating for a pardon to defuse the situation, while Trump’s supporters have rallied with increased financial backing.
