Rising Democrat Star Threatens Texas

Texas is once again at the center of America’s political battles, and this time, Democrats believe they may finally have a shot at flipping one of the nation’s most powerful Republican strongholds.

On Tuesday, James Talarico, a far-left Democratic state lawmaker with a rapidly growing national following, officially entered the race for the U.S. Senate. At just 36 years old, Talarico has been hailed by progressives as a “rising star” and is already being positioned as a serious threat to conservative values in the Lone Star State.

The seat is currently held by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), but Democrats are watching closely as Cornyn faces a primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a staunch Trump ally and strong supporter of the MAGA movement.

Recent polls show Paxton leading Cornyn, which has Democrats smelling blood — and planning to use the GOP primary fight to their advantage.

Talarico’s Left-Wing Message

In his announcement, Talarico framed his campaign as a battle against “billionaire mega-donors” and “rigged politics,” using the populist language Democrats often deploy to fire up their base.

“The biggest divide in our country is not left vs. right — it’s top vs. bottom,” Talarico claimed in a statement to Fox News. “Big money is powerful, but it’s nothing compared to people power.”

Talarico claims he’s fighting for “working Texans,” but conservatives argue his record shows he’s far more interested in pushing a progressive agenda that threatens Texas’ booming economy, energy independence, and traditional values.

Crowded Democrat Field — and a Familiar Name

Talarico isn’t the only Democrat aiming to challenge Republicans.

  • Colin Allred, a former NFL player and congressman, has already launched a Senate campaign.
  • Former astronaut Terry Virts has also entered the race.
  • And Beto O’Rourke, who nearly defeated Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018 before failing spectacularly in later runs for president and Texas governor, has not ruled out another bid.

Despite repeated efforts, Democrats have never been able to flip Texas.
President Donald Trump carried the state in 2024 by more than 13 percentage points, outperforming his margins from both 2016 and 2020.

But Democratic strategists believe they have a narrow path to victory in 2026 if Paxton defeats Cornyn, betting that they can label him “too extreme” to win over moderates.

Talarico’s TikTok Politics

Talarico has carefully built his national profile using viral TikTok videos, cable news appearances, and a highly publicized interview on Joe Rogan’s top-rated podcast, where Rogan even joked that Talarico should run for president someday.

He first grabbed national headlines in 2023 when he and dozens of Texas Democrats fled the state for weeks in an attempt to block a Trump-backed redistricting plan designed to add up to five new conservative congressional seats.

To many conservative Texans, this stunt showed that Talarico is willing to abandon his responsibilities to protect his political party — a move that could hurt him among independent voters in a statewide race.

Republicans Fire Back

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) wasted no time in defining Talarico to voters.

In a statement, the GOP’s campaign arm blasted him as “an out-of-touch Harvard liberal” who doesn’t represent the values of hardworking Texans.

Republicans argue that Talarico’s policies would lead to higher taxes, weaker border security, and federal overreach — the very things Texans have fought to reject.

High Stakes for 2026

The 2026 Texas Senate race could become one of the most expensive and hard-fought battles in the country.

If Democrats flip this seat, it could shift the balance of power in Washington, derailing President Trump’s second-term agenda on border security, energy policy, and election integrity.

Talarico will officially kick off his campaign Tuesday evening at a rally in Round Rock, Texas, just north of Austin — a liberal stronghold where Democrats will attempt to energize their base.

Bottom Line

Texas has been a cornerstone of GOP power for decades, but Democrats are determined to change that.

With President Trump back in the White House and Ken Paxton gaining momentum among the MAGA base, Republicans see a chance to energize their voters like never before.

But conservatives warn: If the left takes Texas, the entire country could change overnight.
