They keep taking major losses.
In a significant development, federal prosecutors recently requested that an appeals court dismiss charges against two former co-defendants of President Donald Trump in the ongoing Mar-a-Lago document case. The Justice Department made the unusual move on Wednesday, asking the court to terminate its efforts to challenge an earlier decision that led to the dismissal of charges against Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, two Mar-a-Lago employees accused of obstructing justice.
The case centers around the handling of classified documents that were stored at Mar-a-Lago after President Trump left office. Last July, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon—appointed by Trump—ruled that special counsel Jack Smith had been unlawfully appointed to lead the investigation into the matter, forcing Smith’s team to appeal. However, now it appears that prosecutors have decided to end the fight to revive charges against Trump’s associates.
Nauta, who worked as Trump’s personal valet, and De Oliveira, a property manager at Mar-a-Lago, were accused of helping the former president allegedly conceal the documents from federal investigators. The Justice Department claimed the two men made false statements and took actions to obstruct the investigation, including allegedly attempting to delete surveillance footage that could have been key evidence.
While prosecutors initially pushed hard to bring charges against Nauta and De Oliveira, they now seem to be backing away. Both men’s attorneys have indicated their agreement with the decision to drop the case. If the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals grants the request, it will effectively close the last chapter of federal cases involving President Trump’s handling of classified materials.
The decision to dismiss these charges could also expedite the release of special counsel Jack Smith’s report on the matter. Although there has been mounting pressure from Democrats for its public release, the report has remained under wraps due to ongoing legal proceedings.
This move marks another significant moment in the Trump legal saga, which includes other high-profile cases, such as charges related to the 2020 election and the Manhattan hush money case. However, as the legal challenges continue to unfold, one thing is clear: the fight over Trump’s post-presidential conduct is far from over.
