The GOP needs answers.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Republicans have launched a powerful investigation into California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass over their handling of violent riots and their refusal to support federal immigration enforcement in Los Angeles.
The inquiry, led by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) and Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), zeroes in on what they call a dangerous breakdown of leadership in California’s Democrat-run cities—just as federal ICE agents carried out legal deportation operations.
Federal Response After Attacks on ICE Agents in Sanctuary City
President Donald Trump responded swiftly to escalating violence, deploying 2,000 National Guard troops—later expanded to 4,000—and 700 Marines—to restore order in Los Angeles, where ICE agents were under attack during lawful immigration raids.
Trump’s bold move came after disturbing reports of law enforcement being overwhelmed in a sanctuary city that has openly refused to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Despite claims from far-left activists, ICE firmly denied rumors that detainees were being held unlawfully, calling the accusations “false and irresponsible.”
House GOP: Newsom and Bass Put Illegal Immigrants Before American Law
Chairman Comer accused Newsom and Bass of placing the interests of illegal immigrants above the rule of law, noting their public opposition to the National Guard deployment—despite the fact that local police had failed to contain the violence.
“You have championed sanctuary policies that block cooperation with federal law enforcement and endanger public safety,” Comer wrote. “Your actions have undermined constitutional authority and emboldened lawless behavior.”
The committee is now demanding full transparency. Newsom and Bass have been ordered to hand over all communications with law enforcement agencies from June 1 to June 13, including:
- Internal emails
- Dispatch logs
- Video evidence
- And any data on how rioters obtained weapons
Court Battle: Trump Scores Legal Win as National Guard Stays in Control
Newsom sued to block the deployment, claiming federal overreach. A lower court initially ruled in his favor—but the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals halted that decision within hours, keeping control of the National Guard under President Trump’s authority.
President Trump celebrated the win on Truth Social, declaring:
“If I didn’t send the Military into Los Angeles, that city would be burning to the ground right now. We saved L.A.”
Democrats Deflect While Violence Escalates
Governor Newsom, instead of addressing public safety, lashed out at the administration on social media. He claimed that Trump had pulled National Guard units from the border—where they were fighting fentanyl trafficking—to deploy them to L.A.
Mayor Bass, meanwhile, attended a vigil for illegal immigrants and vowed to “protect all Angelenos” regardless of their immigration status. Her public statements have drawn sharp criticism for ignoring the violence inflicted on law enforcement officers during the raids.
Republicans Demand Accountability for Sanctuary Failures
The House Oversight Committee has set a deadline of June 27 for Newsom and Bass to comply with the investigation. Republicans say the American people deserve to know why federal agents were left vulnerable—and why Democrat officials chose to side with chaos over order.
As President Trump continues to prioritize law and order, border security, and the protection of American communities, the investigation underscores a deeper clash between constitutional authority and radical sanctuary policies.
