Things got very heated.
A heated scene erupted inside the U.S. Capitol this week after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) got into a shouting match with Republican Congressman Mike Lawler (R-NY) — and the whole fiery exchange was caught on camera.
The confrontation happened moments after a press conference when Lawler approached Jeffries about the Democrats’ refusal to negotiate with Republicans over extending the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) tax credits.
Jeffries Snaps — Brings Up Trump Out of Nowhere
As Lawler challenged him to support a bipartisan fix, Jeffries fired back sarcastically, asking, “Did your boss, Donald Trump, give you permission?” — drawing gasps from nearby reporters.
Lawler, holding a printed copy of his bill, replied sharply:
“President Trump isn’t my boss — but he is the reason millions of working Americans got a tax cut while you tried to raise theirs.”
The Republican pointed out that Jeffries himself had voted for temporary funding bills in the past to avoid shutdowns.
Jeffries mocked him again, saying, “You’re embarrassing yourself right now.”
Lawler didn’t back down:
“You could sign onto this right now. Four Democrats already have. Why won’t you?”

Republicans Push Back on Democrat Demands
Democrats have repeatedly blocked the GOP-backed funding bill that would keep the government running through November 21, instead demanding permanent extensions of Obamacare subsidies and new Medicaid spending.
Jeffries has insisted that any short-term deal must include a permanent subsidy extension — a move Republicans say would explode the deficit.
Tax Reform Sparks More Fireworks
The fight escalated when Jeffries attacked the GOP’s Working Families Tax Cut Act, accusing Republicans of “slashing taxes for billionaires.”
Lawler hit back hard, reminding him that the Trump-backed tax cuts delivered “the largest middle-class tax relief in history,” saving the average New Yorker $4,000 a year and expanding the SALT deduction cap that helps hardworking homeowners.
When Lawler continued to press, Jeffries snapped,
“Why don’t you just keep your mouth shut?”
The Democrat then accused Lawler of performing for cameras. Lawler shot back that Jeffries was “too used to the spotlight and too afraid of accountability.”
Lawler Fires Back — “You Spent $42 Million and Still Lost Ground”
As the crowd looked on, Lawler blasted Jeffries for spending $42 million in the last election cycle and “still losing seats.” He also jabbed Jeffries over his silence on New York’s far-left mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani, who recently smeared Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks.
Jeffries ignored the comment, smirked, and ended the clash by saying,
“I’ve given you your 15 minutes of fame. You’re an embarrassment — and you’re going down next year.”
Capitol Chaos Continues
The tense face-off came just hours after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) had his own standoff with Senate Democrats Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) as the government shutdown blame game intensified.
Lawler later told reporters,
“The American people deserve adults in the room — not arrogant politicians looking for TV time.”
Across social media, conservatives praised Lawler for standing up to Jeffries’ “Washington arrogance” and “defending taxpayers over political theater.”
