Here’s what happened.
In a stunning legal twist, a Biden-appointed federal judge has just ordered President Donald Trump’s White House to provide live American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at every press briefing — an unprecedented move that many conservatives see as another act of judicial overreach.
Biden Judge Steps In To Direct Trump Administration
U.S. District Judge Amir Ali, appointed by Joe Biden, ruled Tuesday that the Trump administration must immediately begin including ASL interpreters during all public press briefings led by President Trump or Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
The case was brought by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and a deaf activist who claimed the lack of ASL interpretation violated the Rehabilitation Act. Ali agreed, saying that excluding ASL users from briefings on “war, healthcare, and the economy” caused “clear and present harm.”
Ali’s ruling went even further — declaring that the White House must ensure a “simultaneous and publicly accessible” ASL interpreter for every live press event. He ordered full compliance by November 7.
Demands Go Beyond the President
The plaintiffs didn’t stop there. They also demanded that interpreters appear at events featuring JD Vance, Melania Trump, and Usha Vance. They even pushed for rules on how large the interpreter’s image must appear on television broadcasts — and for ASL versions of all videos on WhiteHouse.gov and social media pages.
The Trump administration pushed back, arguing that closed captioning already provides accessibility, but the judge sided with plaintiffs who said many deaf Americans rely primarily on ASL, not written English.
Conservatives Sound the Alarm on Judicial Activism
Conservative commentators quickly criticized the ruling, calling it another example of unelected judges dictating policy to a duly elected administration.
“This is what happens when Biden’s judges try to run the executive branch from the bench,” one political analyst said. “They can’t defeat Trump at the ballot box, so they use the courts.”
Many Americans agree that accessibility is important — but forcing the President’s communications team to operate under court supervision is raising serious constitutional questions.
What It Means for the Trump White House
The Trump administration must now comply with the order while exploring possible appeals. The White House has emphasized its commitment to reaching all Americans but warned against allowing activist courts to set dangerous new precedents.
This latest ruling adds to a growing list of legal and political challenges from Biden-appointed judges who appear intent on undermining Trump’s agenda.
