California Governor Gavin Newsom quietly pulled off a stunning and costly victory Tuesday night, pushing through his controversial Proposition 50 — a move that hands Democrats a major advantage heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
The Associated Press called the results moments after polls closed. More than 64% of voters — roughly 4.4 million Californians — backed the measure, while just 35% said no.
Standing beside his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the Democrat governor wasted no time turning his win into a political weapon against President Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump is a historic president — the most historically unpopular president in modern history,” Newsom declared, taking a direct jab at the man reshaping America’s conservative movement.

The Democrat-led legislature crafted Prop 50 specifically to cancel the state’s independent redistricting commission — giving full control of new congressional maps to Sacramento politicians loyal to Newsom.
Analysts say the new maps will erase conservative-leaning districts, particularly in Northern and Southern California, cementing Democrat dominance for the next decade.
Obama, AOC, and Harris Join Newsom’s Crusade
Barack Obama, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Kamala Harris all jumped in to boost Newsom’s plan, flooding the airwaves with ads and appeals to vote “yes.”
Obama went so far as to claim Republicans wanted to “steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election.”
Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger blasted the measure on CNN, calling it “a terrible mistake” that “takes the power away from the people.”
“Texas did something wrong,” Schwarzenegger said, “and now California has done something worse. This isn’t democracy — it’s political revenge.”
Republicans Face an Uphill Battle
With Democrats now holding total control over California’s redistricting process, the GOP’s already small foothold in the state could shrink even further.
Republicans currently hold just nine of California’s 52 congressional seats, and analysts warn that Prop 50 could eliminate several of those.
The new district lines will carve up conservative regions, merge strongholds with liberal cities, and give Democrats a built-in edge heading into 2026.
Although left-leaning researchers claim the maps “won’t harm minority representation,” conservative experts say that’s a smokescreen for pure partisan gerrymandering.
