MAGA Losing 2028 Presidential Election?

Here’s what conservatives need to know.

Fresh polling is raising real concern inside the Republican Party about whether Vice President JD Vance—long viewed as President Donald Trump’s natural successor—may be losing ground heading into the 2028 presidential race. The shift is subtle but noticeable, and it comes at a time when conservatives want stability, strength, and a proven defender of the America First agenda.

Because of the 22nd Amendment, President Trump cannot run for a third term. That means the GOP will soon need a new nominee capable of keeping the movement strong, securing the border, restoring law and order, and protecting American families from the radical Left.

For months, most experts assumed JD Vance would inherit that role. But new polling shows the race tightening—especially against one major figure with unmatched name recognition: Donald Trump Jr.

Vance’s Lead Has Been Shrinking for Months

A new McLaughlin & Associates survey reveals that Vance’s once-wide lead is narrowing dramatically.

  • August: Vance led Trump Jr. by 20 points (36% to 16%).
  • September: His lead grew to 28 points, suggesting the base was consolidating.
  • October: The lead shrank to 18 points.
  • November: The gap collapsed to just 10 points, with Vance at 34% and Trump Jr. at 24%.

For a movement that values strength and momentum, this trend has caught the attention of conservative voters across the country.

Trump’s Tough Polling Month May Be Affecting Vance

The shift comes as President Trump endures a rough stretch in national surveys. A recent Economist/YouGov poll shows his approval rating at:

  • 39% approval
  • 58% disapproval

Some analysts say this temporary slump could be dragging down Vance, who is closely tied to the administration and must remain aligned with Trump’s agenda.

One political expert put it plainly:

“If Trump takes a hit, Vance takes a hit. They rise and fall together.”

Other Polls Still Show Vance Dominating the GOP Field

Not all surveys agree. In fact, some show Vance performing extremely well.

A YouGov poll from November 6–9 gave Vance:

  • 42% support,
    while Trump Jr. received 13%.

An Echelon Insights survey showed similar strength, placing Vance at 46% among likely GOP voters.

These polls suggest that the conservative base still sees Vance as a serious, credible, America First leader—despite recent fluctuations.

The 2028 Republican Field Is Growing

Outside of Vance and Trump Jr., several major conservative figures are being watched closely.

A recent Axios report floated the possibility of Sen. Ted Cruz entering the race. Cruz downplayed the chatter, noting that his focus remains on “representing 31 million Texans.”

President Trump himself praised several possible successors in October:

“We have great people… JD is great. Marco Rubio is great. If they ever teamed up, it would be unstoppable.”

Many conservatives agree—a united America First ticket would be a political powerhouse.

What Vance and Trump Jr. Are Saying

JD Vance has played down speculation, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity:

“I try not to think ahead. My job is to serve the American people right now.”

Trump Jr., meanwhile, has repeatedly denied rumors of a 2028 bid—often in blunt and colorful terms. But his rising numbers show the base is paying attention.

Where Things Stand Today

Most presidential hopefuls wait until after the midterms before launching official campaigns. But the early numbers make one thing clear: The fight to lead the Republican Party in 2028 will be one of the most important battles in modern political history.

Will JD Vance carry the America First mantle into the next decade?
Will Donald Trump Jr. emerge as the new champion of the movement?
Will another conservative star rise unexpectedly?

One thing is certain: The MAGA base will decide—and they always show up.
