Democrats are fighting tooth and nail against Trump’s ICE.
California Democrats have advanced a controversial bill to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) that would ban federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from wearing masks during raids, a move critics say is designed to undermine President Trump’s border crackdown and endanger law enforcement officers.
The legislation passed late Thursday in the state legislature and now sits on Newsom’s desk. While the governor has not said whether he will sign it, he previously admitted in July that his office was reviewing whether the proposal is constitutional. His office declined to comment on Friday.
California Targets Trump’s Immigration Agenda
Liberal activists and Democrat lawmakers claim ICE agents wear masks to “intimidate” illegal immigrants during enforcement actions. The push to ban masks comes as President Trump’s immigration crackdown intensifies nationwide, with California — especially Los Angeles — emerging as a major hotspot.
This summer, mass protests erupted after ICE conducted large-scale workplace raids on companies suspected of hiring illegal immigrants. In response to escalating unrest, President Trump deployed National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to secure federal facilities, triggering an ongoing court battle with California officials determined to block his immigration policies.
Trump Officials Warn of Danger to ICE Families
The Trump administration strongly defends ICE officers wearing masks, arguing it is a necessary measure to protect them and their families from violent retaliation.
“I don’t particularly like masks, but ICE officers need them because their families are being doxed,” Trump’s border czar Tom Homan explained at a recent White House briefing.
“Their children are being targeted, and their families have been put in harm’s way.”
Conservatives warn that stripping ICE agents of this protection will embolden dangerous cartels, gangs, and radical activists while putting law enforcement directly in harm’s way.
What the Bill Really Does
The bill would ban any face coverings used to conceal an officer’s identity during operations. However, it would still allow for standard safety gear like surgical masks, motorcycle helmets, and breathing equipment.
If signed into law, all law enforcement agencies in California, including local police and federal agencies like ICE, would have to adopt new mask policies by July 2026.
Why Critics Are Outraged
Republicans and law enforcement leaders argue this legislation prioritizes illegal immigrants over American citizens and the safety of federal agents.
By banning masks, they say California Democrats are making it easier for violent gangs, drug cartels, and radical protestors to target officers and their families, creating a chilling effect on immigration enforcement.
“This is a direct attack on the men and women who keep our country safe,” one conservative commentator said. “Newsom is more concerned with protecting criminals than protecting Americans.”
Bottom Line
If Gov. Newsom signs this bill, it will dramatically weaken ICE’s ability to enforce federal immigration laws, while exposing agents and their loved ones to real-world threats.
With California already struggling under a surge of illegal immigration, this latest move could set a dangerous precedent — handcuffing law enforcement while empowering criminals.
