Who does AOC Represent, the American people or Palestine?

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has recently criticized the Democratic National Convention (DNC) lineup in Chicago, highlighting what she perceives as a critical oversight regarding the Israel conflict. Just days after delivering her own speech at the convention, Ocasio-Cortez took to social media to call for a reevaluation of the party’s stance on the ongoing conflict.

The New York congresswoman foolishly emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to more prominently include the Palestinian perspective in its discussions, suggesting that failing to do so undermines the principle of shared humanity on both sides of the conflict. “We must honor the humanity of those affected on both sides,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. “Ignoring the plight of Palestinians is tantamount to participating in their dehumanization.”

Her remarks were partly in response to criticism from author Ta-Nehisi Coates, who pointed out the absence of Palestinian American voices at the convention. This criticism comes at a time when the Biden administration and the broader Democratic Party face mounting pressure from the left flank of the party, which is increasingly dissatisfied with the U.S. support for Israel amidst the ongoing war with Hamas, following the October 7 attacks.

The situation in Chicago has been tense, with thousands of protesters rallying against the Biden administration’s foreign policy and its backing of Israel. Demonstrations against U.S. aid to Israel and the perceived mishandling of the conflict have intensified, with protesters donning keffiyehs and marching through the streets with banners demanding an end to U.S. support for Israel.

These protests continued for a third consecutive night, with the demonstrators gathering near the United Center, where the DNC was held. The Chicago Police Department reported that 56 people were arrested after confrontations with law enforcement. Charges included felony and misdemeanor offenses such as resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and criminal damage to property. The police confirmed that many of those detained received citations for their actions during the unrest.
