Here’s what Bolton has to say.
Former National Security Adviser John Bolton is warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin may be plotting to use a high-profile meeting with President Donald Trump to push a so-called “Russian peace plan” for the Ukraine war — one designed to benefit Moscow, not America.
Speaking on NewsNation’s On Balance, Bolton claimed Putin will likely try to hand Trump a ceasefire proposal, expecting him to deliver it to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Bolton described the move as a clever PR stunt aimed at making Putin look like the world’s peacemaker.
“It’s all about who appears more committed to peace,” Bolton said. “But the reality is, both sides remain far apart.”
Trump’s Tougher Line on Moscow
President Trump, increasingly frustrated with Russia’s ongoing aggression, has warned that he’s prepared to ramp up sanctions — not only on Moscow but also on countries like India that keep buying Russian oil. Originally, Trump gave Putin 50 days to agree to a ceasefire. He has now shortened that deadline to this Friday.
Trump has signaled interest in meeting with Putin multiple times, but the details remain unclear — including whether Zelensky would attend. Bolton claims Putin’s ultimate goal is to project international legitimacy and pull Trump “back into his orbit.”
Bolton’s Warning to Trump
“Trump is entering something much bigger than he realizes,” Bolton argued. “Sure, the cameras will love it, but Putin will be looking to turn that attention into leverage.”
During Trump’s first term, the two leaders met six times. Trump has often said he believes strong personal relationships between world leaders can solve conflicts faster than traditional diplomacy.
Bolton acknowledged that Trump is displeased with Putin but believes the president still hopes to revive their old rapport — using friendship as the foundation for ending the war. Bolton dismissed that as “a gross oversimplification” of international politics.
The Big Question
With Trump’s ceasefire deadline fast approaching, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will Putin outmaneuver Trump — or will America’s president turn the tables and force the Russian leader into a deal that serves U.S. interests first?
