Democrats Use Trump Tactics On GOP

The political map wars are heating up — and blue-state Republicans could pay the price.

President Trump has called on Texas lawmakers to redraw their House districts to secure as many as five new GOP seats before the 2026 elections. It’s a bold move aimed at protecting the Republican majority in Congress — but it has also triggered a nationwide backlash.

Blue States Plot Retaliation

Democrat-controlled states like California, New York, and Illinois are now considering mid-decade redistricting of their own. In California alone, such a power grab could erase every Republican gain in Texas — and more.

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-CA), whose district could be targeted, didn’t mince words. “Voters don’t want politicians rigging the maps for a short-term win,” he said, blasting both parties for manipulating district lines.

GOP Lawmakers Sound the Alarm

Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) has introduced a bill to ban mid-decade redistricting nationwide, warning that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s push to override California’s independent redistricting commission is “a very dangerous thing” and “a threat to democracy.”

Kiley fears a “domino effect” — states redrawing lines over and over, creating chaos and instability just to gain a political edge.

Texas Democrats Stall — For Now

In Texas, Democrats fled the state to block Republicans from passing their new map. But with a GOP governor, Republican majorities in the legislature, and a conservative state Supreme Court, the plan is almost certain to pass.

Democrat Hypocrisy on Full Display

While Democratic governors slam Texas for redrawing maps mid-decade, Republicans point out that these same states have their own history of gerrymandering.
New York Democrats already attempted it in 2022 — until their maps were struck down in court for being too partisan.

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), who represents a swing district, says enough is enough. He’s pushing a bill to outlaw gerrymandering nationwide, declaring, “It’s wrong in New York, Texas, California, and Illinois.”

California Republicans Push Back

Reps. Young Kim (R-CA) and Ken Calvert (R-CA) say overriding California’s independent redistricting process “disenfranchises voters” and erodes public trust.

The National Republican Congressional Committee is also hammering Newsom, calling his interest in redistricting a “desperate and pathetic attempt” to please his radical base in preparation for a presidential run.

The Stakes Couldn’t Be Higher

Analysts warn this redistricting war could determine who controls Congress for the next decade. If Democrats follow through on their plans, Republicans in blue states could be wiped off the map — literally.

As Rep. LaMalfa summed it up: “We can tell them, ‘Don’t do this.’ But they’re going to do it anyway.”
