Top Democrat Booed In Ultra-Blue State

Voters aren’t buying what Democrats are trying to sell them.

On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer encountered boos from some attendees during an Israel parade in New York City, as seen in several social media videos.

As the highest-ranking Jewish official in the United States and a long-time supporter of Israel, Schumer has recently increased his criticism of Israeli leadership amidst the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Israel has been facing increasing international scrutiny over its extended military operations in Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, as reported by the Associated Press, over 36,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 76,000 have been injured. The ministry, managed by Hamas, indicates that at least two-thirds of the casualties are women and children, without distinguishing between combatants and civilians.

The conflict escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, resulting in 1,200 deaths and over 200 abductions.

Earlier this year, Schumer called for new elections in Israel and criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an “obstacle to peace.” Netanyahu dismissed these comments as “ridiculous.”

Despite his criticisms, Schumer is expected to work alongside Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson to invite Netanyahu to address Congress.

Videos from the parade showed Schumer being introduced to the crowd, who responded with boos. These boos persisted as he chanted “Bring them home,” referring to the hostages still held in Gaza. A temporary ceasefire in November had resulted in the release of about half of these hostages.

An independent photographer known as Viral News NYC posted a 25-second video of the incident on X, formerly Twitter, which quickly gained attention and backlash towards Schumer. Despite some applause, the boos were distinctly audible.

Mark Treyger, CEO of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY), which organized the parade, expressed appreciation for the support from various state and national lawmakers, including Schumer. He emphasized the strong turnout as a reflection of the Jewish community’s solidarity with Israel and their urgent call for the hostages’ return.

Treyger described the event as a significant demonstration of support for Israel and pride in Jewish identity, noting that it was crucial during these challenging times to show unwavering support and demand the safe return of the hostages.

Social media reactions included criticisms of Schumer for his perceived silence during recent antisemitic protests on U.S. campuses. Dr. Eli David commented on X that Schumer deserved the boos, while another account, The Israel Files, noted the widespread dissatisfaction among parade participants and Schumer’s mispronunciation of an Israeli hostage’s name. They warned that Schumer and President Biden might be underestimating the current Jewish sentiment, which could affect the upcoming election season.
