Another lawmaker shows his true colors.
Washington, D.C. – In a stunning political twist, former Congressman and Tea Party firebrand Joe Walsh has officially declared himself a Democrat, walking away from the conservative movement he once championed.
Walsh made the announcement Tuesday in a Substack post that’s already stirring controversy. The former Illinois Republican—who ran a short-lived primary campaign against President Donald Trump in 2020—said the GOP has, in his words, become a “threat to democracy.”
“Three words I never thought I’d say: I’m a Democrat,” Walsh wrote. “The stakes are just too high. The very foundation of America is under attack.”
From Conservative Warrior to Democrat Ally
Once a proud member of Congress who fought for limited government and constitutional rights, Walsh now claims the Democratic Party is the last line of defense for core American values—freedom, rule of law, and democracy.
He argues that no viable third party is coming to save the day, and defeating Trump’s Republican Party requires what he calls a “big tent” coalition.
“Right now, only Democrats are standing up for democracy,” he wrote. “We need moderates, progressives, and conservatives like me under one roof if we want to win.”
Still a Gun Rights Advocate and Border Hawk—But Says the GOP Has Lost Its Way
In a move likely to leave many conservatives shaking their heads, Walsh doubled down on traditionally right-leaning positions—saying he still supports Second Amendment rights, strong border enforcement, and free speech. However, he insists the Republican Party no longer represents those ideals.
“I’m not the same man I was 15 years ago,” Walsh wrote. “I’ve listened. I’ve grown. And I’ve realized we need compassion and decency in our politics again.”
Slamming Trump’s GOP: “Cruelty Sells”
Walsh took direct aim at President Trump, describing him as “the worst of us” and accusing the GOP of copying what he calls the former president’s “cruelty, dishonesty, and authoritarianism.”
“America is better than this,” he stated. “It’s time for decency to sell again. It’s time to beat Trump’s Republican Party at the ballot box.”
He claims that Republicans have mastered the art of political warfare while Democrats have lacked the will to fight. His message to the Left: Toughen up.
“Take it from a former Republican fighter: if we’re going to stop Trump’s takeover of American politics, the Democratic Party needs to learn how to win—and fight to win.”
Will Voters Follow Him? Walsh’s Defection Sends a Message
While Joe Walsh’s political shift may not sway millions of voters, it’s a loud signal to older, values-driven Americans who may be frustrated by the tone and direction of today’s Republican Party.
Whether you agree with him or not, one thing is clear: the battle for the soul of America’s political future is far from over.
