Trump Causing America To Shut Down

You won’t believe what the left is planning now.

Left-wing immigration activists are calling for a nationwide shutdown on Friday, January 30, urging supporters to stop working, stop shopping, and keep children home from school in protest of federal immigration enforcement carried out under President Donald Trump.

The coordinated action, promoted online as a “National Shutdown,” is being described by organizers as a response to recent law-enforcement encounters involving federal immigration agents. Critics, however, warn the effort could cause widespread economic disruption while targeting agencies enforcing existing U.S. law.

Nationwide Protest Push Gains Steam

According to the group’s official website and social media postings, organizers are encouraging a day of “no work, no school, no shopping”, arguing that halting commerce will pressure the federal government to scale back immigration enforcement.

The movement has gained traction on online forums and local message boards, with posts circulating in multiple states promoting participation in what supporters call a nationwide act of resistance.

Federal Officials Sound Alarm on Violence

Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin has warned that the rising rhetoric surrounding immigration enforcement has already led to increased danger for federal officers.

“Attacks and demonization of ICE are wrong,” McLaughlin said in a previous statement. “ICE officers are now facing a 1,300 percent increase in assaults.”

Federal officials stress that immigration agents are performing duties authorized by Congress and supported by voters in the most recent election.

Minneapolis Incidents at Center of Controversy

The planned shutdown follows two fatal encounters involving federal agents in Minneapolis, incidents that have drawn national attention and sparked repeated demonstrations.

One involved Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse who was killed during a confrontation with immigration agents on Nicollet Avenue. DHS officials say agents fired in self-defense after a physical struggle. Family members and local activists dispute that account. Investigations remain ongoing.

In a separate incident earlier this month, Renee Nicole Good, also 37, was fatally shot in the Cedar-Riverside area, prompting several nights of protests and increasing scrutiny of federal law-enforcement operations in the city.

Protests Turn Disruptive

Following both incidents, demonstrations escalated. Protesters gathered outside hotels believed to be housing federal agents, damaging property, breaking windows, and creating sustained disturbances late into the night.

Video footage also showed demonstrators targeting a Home2 Suites by Hilton near the University of Minnesota. State officials later confirmed that federal agents deployed chemical irritants to disperse crowds after confrontations intensified.

Union Leaders Join the Call

Union organizations have amplified calls for the shutdown. Lee Saunders, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), issued a statement criticizing federal immigration enforcement and expressing outrage over Pretti’s death.

“What is unfolding in Minnesota and across this nation is appalling,” Saunders said, accusing the administration of intimidation tactics.

Supporters of the Trump administration argue unions and activist groups are politicizing ongoing investigations while ignoring the legal responsibilities of federal law-enforcement officers.

Trump Administration Responds

President Donald Trump said his administration is closely monitoring the situation.

“I don’t like any shooting,” Trump said. “We’re reviewing everything.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI are examining the Pretti incident, while U.S. Customs and Border Protection is conducting an internal review.

She emphasized that investigators will be allowed to complete their work before conclusions are reached.

DHS Defends Immigration Enforcement

DHS officials reiterated that immigration enforcement remains a core public-safety mission.

“Illegal aliens that ICE is deporting broke our nation’s laws,” McLaughlin said. “DHS will continue to carry out immigration enforcement to protect Americans from criminals, drug traffickers, and gang members.”

She added that the administration continues to encourage voluntary compliance.

“For individuals in the country illegally, the safest and most efficient option is self-deportation,” she said, citing the CBP Home app, which offers travel and financial assistance.

“President Trump and Secretary Noem have made the message clear: leave now.”

Shutdown Still Scheduled

Despite warnings from federal officials and concerns from business leaders, organizers say the January 30 shutdown will proceed as planned.

As the date approaches, law-enforcement agencies nationwide are preparing for potential disruptions, while many Americans question whether the protest will pressure Washington — or primarily impact workers, families, and small businesses.
