President Donald Trump previously raised the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland, a proposal he later walked back in favor of negotiations after speaking with Mark Rutte, the head of NATO.
In the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, NATO activated its Article 5 mutual defense provision for the first and only time. Denmark quickly joined other allied nations by deploying troops to support U.S.-led operations in Afghanistan starting in 2002.
