It’s becoming very clear that the Trump administration is not playing any games.
President-elect Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, has issued a stern warning to sanctuary cities that are standing in opposition to the incoming administration’s tougher stance on illegal immigration: Either get on board or get out of the way.
In an appearance on Sunday Morning Futures, Homan, who served as the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), laid out the Trump administration’s plan to address the escalating problem of illegal immigration and its impact on public safety. He made it clear that sanctuary cities—places that shield illegal immigrants from federal law enforcement—will face significant consequences if they continue to block efforts to enforce immigration laws.
Homan explained that when law enforcement is allowed to do its job, dangerous criminals can be apprehended before being released back into communities. “If you let us in the jail, we can arrest the bad guys where they belong,” Homan told Maria Bartiromo. “But when you release these criminals into the community, you put everyone at risk—citizens, officers, and even the criminals themselves.” He emphasized that the Trump administration would not hesitate to take action. “When you release a criminal, we will send an entire team to find them in your community, and when we find them, there may be others—illegals who aren’t even on our radar—that will also be arrested.”
Homan’s tough approach contrasts sharply with the policies of the Biden administration, which has often been accused of being too lenient on illegal immigration. Under the Biden administration, ICE officers have been restricted in their enforcement actions, leaving criminals free to roam.
While many Democrat-led cities and states have resisted Trump’s immigration policies, with some even passing local laws to obstruct ICE actions, Homan is resolute. Cities like Boston, Denver, and New York have been vocal in their opposition, with some city councils and mayors doubling down on policies that protect illegal immigrants. However, Homan commended New York City Mayor Eric Adams for his willingness to engage in dialogue, saying that Adams’ focus on public safety makes him open to collaborating on ways to make the city safer.
Ultimately, Homan made it clear that the Trump administration would take action with or without the cooperation of these sanctuary cities. “We’re going to remove public safety threats from these communities, whether the mayors and governors like it or not,” he declared. The message is clear: the Trump administration is committed to enforcing the law and protecting American citizens from the dangers posed by illegal immigration.
