Trump Cancels The NFL?

Trump has a very big decision to make.

President Donald Trump may be on the verge of blocking one of the biggest sports media deals in history — a billion-dollar partnership between Disney-owned ESPN and the NFL. The move would hand ESPN the league’s prized “RedZone” brand and other top assets, while giving the NFL a 10% stake in ESPN.

But the agreement may never see daylight without approval from Trump’s Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission — and the President has made it clear he has zero patience for corporate media giants like Disney that push “woke” politics and target his administration.

Disney’s Risky Power Play Into Sports Streaming

With its traditional TV viewership collapsing, Disney is betting everything on sports streaming. This fall, the company plans to launch a new ESPN direct-to-consumer platform — and it’s banking on the NFL’s massive audience to drive subscriptions.

However, Disney’s track record of left-wing bias on ABC News, coupled with its aggressive DEI policies, has many conservatives urging Trump to use this deal as leverage.

Sports commentator Clay Travis fired the opening shot:

“Why should Trump approve a Disney media takeover when ABC has shown relentless bias against him? His FCC should force ESPN and the NFL to dump DEI and commit to real viewpoint diversity.”

Trump’s Long Memory with Disney — and the NFL

President Trump’s feud with ABC News is well-known. Last year, the network paid him $15 million to settle a defamation case. He has blasted “The View,” late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, and other ABC personalities for mocking him, and hinted at FCC scrutiny of their broadcast license.

The NFL hasn’t been spared either. Trump famously called for boycotts when players knelt during the National Anthem, fought stadium deals that erased team traditions, and once sued the league while trying to become an NFL owner.

Allies say these personal battles make it highly unlikely Trump will simply approve a deal that consolidates power between two organizations he’s openly fought.

NFL Deal Becomes a Political Football

What was pitched as a business transaction is now a full-blown culture war flashpoint. The deal has quickly drawn fire from MAGA leaders, who see it as a chance for Trump to demand changes in how the NFL and Disney operate — from dumping “woke” hiring quotas to ensuring political balance in coverage.

Ari Fleischer, former White House press secretary, predicts Trump will not sit this one out:

“Given his interest in the NFL and history of using media deals for leverage, it’s hard to imagine him staying on the sidelines.”

Big Tech vs. Big Media — And Trump in the Middle

Disney’s grab for NFL assets is a direct counterpunch to tech giants like Amazon, Apple, and Netflix, which are reshaping live sports broadcasting. Industry experts say if Trump blocks this, it could be a devastating blow to Disney’s sports strategy.

Trade attorney Irwin Kishner calls it “the most valuable programming in media” — and warns that without Trump’s approval, Disney could lose ground fast to Silicon Valley competitors.

The Bottom Line

President Trump has made a career out of taking on media empires and cultural institutions — and winning. Whether it’s over politics, patriotism, or keeping corporations accountable to the American people, this NFL-ESPN deal could become his next big showdown.

If Trump decides to play hardball, the most powerful sports league in America and one of the largest media companies in the world could find themselves on defense — and backed into their own end zone.
