Trump DOJ Investigating Police

Here’s what is going on.

The Trump Department of Justice has officially opened a civil rights investigation into the Portland Police Department, days after a conservative journalist was arrested during a federal law-and-order sweep in Oregon.

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who leads the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, announced the probe Friday with a powerful message on X (formerly Twitter):

“Signed, sealed, delivered!”

Dhillon confirmed that her office had formally notified Portland officials that federal investigators are demanding accountability for what she called “years of failed leadership and biased policing.”

Trump DOJ Takes Action After Conservative Journalist’s Arrest

The investigation comes just after Nick Sortor, a popular conservative influencer and reporter, was arrested outside an ICE facility while covering federal operations.

Dhillon said she personally spoke with Sortor and later briefed Attorney General Pam Bondi about what she described as an urgent need for a full federal review.

“Portland has been under a failed consent decree for over a decade,” Dhillon wrote. “Now, the DOJ under President Trump is stepping in to fix what local Democrats have broken.”

Sortor was released shortly after his arrest and praised the swift federal response, posting online:

“Harmeet is wasting NO TIME holding Portland accountable!”

Federal Scrutiny Over Attacks on Conservative Journalists

In her letter to Portland officials, Dhillon requested body-camera footage and internal records explaining why multiple journalists—especially conservatives—were attacked while local police “stood by and did nothing.”

She urged Americans to “stay tuned and have faith,” noting that President Trump has deployed the National Guard to Portland to restore safety and protect citizens from Antifa violence.

Trump Administration Demands Accountability

Portland Police Chief Bob Day said the department “welcomes” the DOJ’s involvement, claiming his officers have worked with federal authorities since 2012.

But White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made it clear that the Trump administration will not tolerate bias against conservatives or journalists.

“We will not fund states that allow anarchy,” Leavitt said Friday.

President Trump has already ordered his team to review all federal funding headed to Portland, warning that cities that “enable chaos” could lose millions in aid.

Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield (D) confirmed that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized 200 National Guard troops to assist federal agents in the city for up to 60 days.

Trump’s Message: Law, Order, and Accountability

President Trump’s move signals a strong return to his “Law and Order” agenda, promising Americans that his administration will protect citizens’ rights, restore free speech, and stop the targeting of conservatives in Democrat-run cities.

Dhillon’s investigation is expected to broaden in scope, covering civil rights violations, misuse of police authority, and possible collusion between city leaders and radical protest groups.

“For years, Portland’s leaders have allowed chaos to rule the streets,” Dhillon said. “That ends now.”
