Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, announced on Thursday his intention to explore pardoning all individuals involved in the events of January 6th, should he win the presidency. This includes former President Trump. DeSantis stated that this would be one of his top priorities on his inaugural day if he assumes the office of the president.
According to The Hill, during an appearance on “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show” podcast, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his plans for his first day in office if elected president. He stated that he would assemble a team to thoroughly review cases involving individuals who were potentially victims of weaponization or political targeting, including those connected to the events of January 6th. DeSantis emphasized his intention to be proactive in granting pardons and acknowledged that former President Trump, who is currently under federal investigation for his involvement on January 6th, would be among those considered for such pardons.
“I would say any example of disfavored treatment based on politics, or weaponization would be included in that review, no matter how small or how big,” DeSantis said.
Additionally, Governor Ron DeSantis criticized the Justice Department and the FBI, alleging that they have misused their authority by pursuing investigations into the January 6th attack on the Capitol. The Justice Department recently reported that over 1,000 arrests have been made in connection with the Capitol attacks, and approximately 485 individuals have been sentenced for engaging in criminal activities on that day.
Furthermore, Governor Ron DeSantis made assertions regarding the FBI’s alleged targeting of anti-abortion groups and parents who seek to participate in school board meetings. He stated that if he were to be elected, his administration would assess individual cases to determine whether the government had been utilized as a weapon against specific groups.
“We’re going to find examples where the government’s been weaponized against disfavored groups, and we will apply relief as appropriate, but it will be done on a case-by-case basis,” DeSantis added.
