President Donald Trump says vandals are targeting one of America’s most iconic landmarks, and federal authorities are now investigating what happened.
In a Friday post on Truth Social, Trump revealed that the recently renovated Reflecting Pool on the National Mall suffered damage just weeks after taxpayers spent nearly $15 million restoring the historic site.
The Reflecting Pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, is one of the most recognizable symbols in the nation’s capital. Now, according to Trump, individuals are attempting to destroy parts of the newly completed restoration project.
“Things are really looking good in our Nation’s Capital,” Trump wrote. “However, we’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool.”
Trump Claims Vandals Targeted Historic Landmark
According to the president, damage was recently discovered both around the pool and on portions of the newly installed interior surface.
Trump alleged that vandals tore up grass surrounding the memorial area and may have used chemicals to damage sections of the restoration work.
Trump claimed that those responsible also attempted to damage the newly installed interior lining of the pool.
The president compared the incident to previous acts of vandalism reported on the National Mall and suggested similar substances may have been used.
While investigators have not publicly identified any suspects, Trump indicated that law enforcement agencies are actively working the case.
Trouble Follows Multi-Million Dollar Restoration
The controversy comes shortly after completion of a $14.8 million restoration project that was intended to preserve and modernize the historic Reflecting Pool.
Trump announced the project’s completion on June 6, calling it another step toward restoring the beauty of Washington, D.C.
But only days later, visitors began noticing widespread algae growth throughout the pool, partially obscuring the newly restored blue-colored bottom.
The algae quickly became a topic of discussion online, with critics mocking the project while supporters argued that environmental issues can occur after large-scale water restoration efforts.
National Park Service Launches Cleanup Effort
In response to the algae problem, the National Park Service partnered with contractors to begin an extensive cleanup operation.
Officials deployed specialized treatments, including ozone nanobubble technology and environmentally approved chemical solutions designed to eliminate algae without harming wildlife.
Workers have also been using industrial vacuum systems to clean the bottom of the pool and remove buildup.
According to the National Park Service, the treatments pose no threat to fish, birds, or the surrounding environment.
Trump Says Repairs Are Already Underway
Despite the setbacks, Trump said the cleanup operation is making significant progress.
According to the president, roughly three-quarters of the algae has already been removed, and repairs to the vandalized sections are expected to be completed soon.
“The algae is 75% gone,” Trump wrote, adding that the damaged area is relatively small and should be repaired early next week.
Security Presence Increases Around National Mall
As the investigation continues, photos shared online showed National Guard members and U.S. Park Police officers patrolling near the Reflecting Pool and surrounding memorials.
The increased security presence comes after several recent incidents involving political messages and vandalism on federal property.
One of the most controversial involved a large “86 47” message that appeared carved into grass near the National Mall. Administration officials argued the message could be interpreted as a threat toward Trump, the nation’s 47th president.
Why This Matters
For millions of Americans, the Reflecting Pool is more than a tourist attraction. It stands as a symbol of national unity, American history, and the sacrifices made by generations who built and defended the country.
The idea that a newly restored national landmark could be intentionally damaged has sparked anger among many Americans who believe historic sites should be respected regardless of politics.
As investigators continue searching for answers, the focus now shifts to identifying those responsible and ensuring one of Washington’s most treasured landmarks remains protected for future generations.
