Shocking New Poll Shows Republican Steve Hilton Leading in California
A political earthquake just shook California — and the tremors are reaching Washington.
According to a new Emerson College poll, Republican Steve Hilton has taken a narrow lead in the race for California governor, edging past far-left Democrat Katie Porter in what could become one of the biggest political upsets in modern history.
Hilton, a former Fox News host and current conservative commentator, now sits at 16%, while Porter trails at 15%. For a state long dominated by Democrats, this one-point lead has conservatives cheering — and Democrats scrambling.
Republican Momentum Surges in Deep-Blue California
Hilton’s rise marks the first time in nearly two decades that a Republican has topped a major California poll. His grassroots campaign focuses on restoring affordability, tackling homelessness, and holding corrupt politicians accountable — a message hitting home with frustrated Californians tired of one-party rule.
“I love this state so much, and it breaks my heart to see the pain and struggle for regular working people after 15 years of one-party rule,” Hilton told Newsweek. “Everyone can see we need change — and some political balance in California.”
Meanwhile, Democrat Katie Porter’s campaign is in freefall after a series of embarrassing viral videos showing her berating staff and snapping at reporters.
Porter’s Meltdown Backfires
One video clip showed Porter laughing off Trump voters, asking, “How would I need them to win, ma’am?” when pressed about needing their support. When the reporter followed up, Porter abruptly ended the interview, saying she was “done.”
Another resurfaced video from 2021 captured Porter cursing out a female staffer during a Zoom call, shouting: “Get out of my f****** shot.”
The incidents have gone viral, sparking outrage and raising serious doubts about her temperament. Even mainstream outlets admit her numbers are “sliding fast.”
Poll Shock: Voters Want Change
The Emerson poll surveyed 900 likely voters between October 20–21 with a margin of error of ±3.2%.
Hilton leads the crowded field, followed by Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco (R) at 11%. Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and former Health Secretary Xavier Becerra each earned just 5%.
In August, Porter led Hilton 18–12%. Since then, Hilton has gained 4 points, while Porter lost 3 — a dramatic reversal that could reshape California’s political landscape.
California’s One-Party Era Could End
California uses a “jungle primary” system, meaning all candidates — regardless of party — appear on the same ballot. The top two move on to the general election. Historically, that’s meant two Democrats. But if Hilton’s momentum holds, he could easily secure one of those spots and make history.
The last Republican governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, was elected nearly 20 years ago. Since then, Democrats have driven the state into crisis — with record homelessness, surging crime, failing schools, and skyrocketing living costs.
Even many lifelong Democrats admit California’s far-left policies have gone too far.
Trump’s America-First Message Still Resonates
Many analysts believe President Donald Trump’s leadership and populist message are fueling new GOP energy even in deep-blue states.
With Trump’s strong economic record and promise to restore national pride, many disillusioned Californians — especially working-class and Hispanic voters — are rethinking their loyalties.
Hilton’s campaign summed it up perfectly on X:
“First poll since Katie Porter meltdown shows Steve Hilton leading race for California governor.”
Could 2026 Be the Year California Turns Red?
The California primary is set for June 2, 2026, with the general election following on November 3, 2026.
If the current trends continue, Hilton could pull off the unthinkable — flipping America’s bluest state and bringing conservative leadership back to the Golden State.
For millions of Californians watching their neighborhoods decline under liberal policies, the message is clear: Change is coming.
