Trump derangement syndrome is very real.
Democratic Representative Robert Garcia recently accused former President Donald Trump of essentially “creating a private army” by issuing pardons to individuals involved in the January 6 Capitol riot. Garcia made these remarks during an MSNBC interview, where he discussed the Trump administration’s controversial actions, including reports of dismissals of prosecutors who had been involved in prosecuting those responsible for the Capitol attack. Garcia and other critics believe this move is part of a broader effort to shield the rioters from accountability.
The accusations against Trump have intensified in recent weeks, especially after reports surfaced regarding the potential removal of FBI agents involved in investigating the January 6 attack. A memo obtained by The Washington Post revealed that Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove had sought the resignation or firing of senior FBI officials by the start of the week. Bove also requested a list of all FBI agents involved in investigating or prosecuting those connected to the Capitol riot, hinting at a possible purge within the agency.
This all follows Trump’s decision on his first day back in office to issue “full, complete, and unconditional” pardons for around 1,500 individuals convicted in connection with the 2021 Capitol riot. Critics argue that these pardons signal Trump’s ongoing support for those who took part in the violent insurrection, and in doing so, Trump is empowering a dangerous segment of his base.
Garcia condemned this behavior, warning that it wasn’t merely about pardoning the rioters, but about emboldening extremist groups and militia organizations across the country. “By granting these pardons, Trump is sending a clear message to white nationalist and militia groups that he is on their side,” Garcia said, calling it a direct threat to national security.
Trump, for his part, defended the pardons, labeling the rioters as “patriots” who had been unjustly treated by the judicial system. He argued that many of them had served excessive sentences and that the pardons would help to heal the nation by addressing what he described as a “grave injustice.” Despite Trump’s defense, many Democrats are committed to resisting any efforts to undermine the investigations into January 6, warning that any attempt to purge law enforcement officials would further erode trust in the justice system.
