Some Democrats are finally coming to their senses.
President-elect Donald Trump recently commended Florida State Representative Hillary Cassel for her decision to switch from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. In a post on Truth Social, Trump celebrated this shift, noting that Cassel’s move further strengthened the Republican supermajority in the Florida State House.
Cassel, a representative from Broward County, explained her decision was driven by her increasing dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s stance on key issues, particularly its failure to fully support Israel. As a Jewish woman, Cassel grew troubled by the party’s tolerance of radical progressive voices that have, in her view, justified or condoned acts of terrorism. She also expressed frustration with how the Democratic Party has become disconnected from the needs and concerns of everyday Floridians. Cassel made it clear that she could no longer align with a party that no longer reflected her values or beliefs.
Cassel’s decision follows the party switch of another Florida legislator, State Representative Susan Valdés, who left the Democratic Party earlier this month. Valdés, who lost a bid to become the chair of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party, voiced similar frustrations, stating that she could not remain in a party where leadership ignored the needs of her community.
Trump, recognizing the significance of these shifts, invited other Democrats who feel disillusioned with their party’s direction to join the Republican Party. He framed this call as part of the larger mission to “Make America Great Again,” suggesting that the GOP offers a path for those who feel their values are no longer represented by the Democrats.
With Republicans already holding supermajorities in both chambers of the Florida Legislature, the addition of Cassel and Valdés only strengthens the party’s dominance in a state that has become increasingly Republican over the past decade. These defections indicate a growing realignment in Florida, with many former Democrats now looking to the GOP for leadership that aligns with their values.
