U.S. officials say the seized vessels were part of ongoing efforts to evade a sweeping oil quarantine imposed by President Donald Trump late last year. That policy bars ships involved in sanctioned Venezuelan oil from operating anywhere in the world.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth later confirmed that the blockade remains fully in effect and will be aggressively enforced.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that the oil quarantine is a key tool in pressuring Venezuela to comply with U.S. demands.

Earlier this week, Trump announced that the United States will receive between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil from Venezuela’s interim authorities—valued at more than $1 billion.
