Trump’s Border Patrol Changes Tune

This was an unexpected decision.

U.S. Border Patrol officials are pushing back strongly against allegations that they are focusing their efforts on schools, buses, and churches as part of immigration enforcement operations. These claims have surfaced following a recent incident in Alice, Texas, where the local school district sent out a letter to parents, warning that Border Patrol agents might check the immigration status of students on buses during trips for extracurricular activities. The letter quickly drew backlash, prompting the district to retract it.

In response, Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks took to social media to address the controversy, emphasizing that the agency does not target schools, buses, or religious institutions. “Let me be very clear: the U.S. Border Patrol has a long-standing tradition of protecting our country and securing our borders. We do not focus our efforts on schools, buses, or churches,” Banks stated in a video message.

Gloria Chavez, the chief of the Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector, also issued a statement affirming the agency’s primary mission to safeguard the border and strengthen national security. She clarified that Border Patrol’s operations remain focused on conducting lawful immigration inspections at checkpoints, not on disrupting local schools or communities. Chavez added that misinformation around these issues only fuels unnecessary fear and confusion.

The Rio Grande Valley Sector, covering a vast 34,000 square miles in southern Texas, includes Jim Wells County, where Alice is located. Despite the controversy, Chavez and other Border Patrol officials stressed that their support for local communities, including schools, remains unwavering.

It’s important to note that federal law allows Border Patrol agents to check immigration status in vehicles traveling within 100 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border. This includes locations like Alice, which is within close proximity to several Border Patrol checkpoints. The law permits such checks to ensure national security and uphold immigration laws.

While concerns have been raised, the situation underscores the need for accurate information and clear communication. Border Patrol’s focus is on securing the nation’s borders and maintaining public safety, not targeting innocent students or communities. It’s critical to stay informed and not let rumors dictate the conversation around border security and immigration enforcement.
