Trump’s Presidency At Risk

Here’s what conservatives need to know.

President Donald Trump could be heading toward a dramatically different political landscape in Washington as the 2026 midterm elections approach, with control of the U.S. Senate now hanging in the balance.

The latest election forecast from Decision Desk HQ shows an extraordinarily close battle for the Senate, where Republicans are fighting to preserve their majority and Democrats are attempting to regain control of the chamber.

As of September 8, Decision Desk HQ gives Democrats and Republicans an equal 50 percent chance of controlling the Senate. The election forecaster reached its latest assessment after running 1 million simulations of Senate races across the country.

The development raises the stakes considerably for Trump because congressional control will determine how much cooperation — or opposition — his administration encounters on Capitol Hill during the final two years of his term.

Senate Battle Tightens Ahead of Midterm Elections

Republicans currently control the Senate, but several competitive races have turned what once appeared to be an advantage into a much tighter national contest.

Decision Desk HQ’s latest model shows just how uncertain the political environment has become.

The organization currently classifies five Senate races in its Toss Up category, while other races remain competitive enough to influence the final balance of power.

For Trump and congressional Republicans, maintaining control of the Senate would provide an important advantage in Washington.

Losing the chamber would create a very different political situation.

Why Losing the Senate Would Matter for Trump

Control of the Senate carries consequences extending far beyond individual pieces of legislation.

The Constitution gives senators an important role in confirming presidential nominees, including federal judges, Cabinet officials and other senior administration appointments.

A Senate controlled by Trump’s political opponents could therefore make confirmations more difficult while giving Democrats greater control over committees and the chamber’s legislative agenda.

That could complicate Trump’s efforts to advance his priorities during the remainder of his presidency.

It would not, however, put Trump’s presidency itself directly at stake. The midterm elections determine control of Congress, not whether the sitting president remains in office.

Several States Could Determine Senate Control

The fight for the Senate is increasingly centered on a relatively small number of highly competitive states.

That means voters in only a handful of races could ultimately determine which party controls the chamber.

Republicans are defending seats in several important contests, while Democrats are attempting to protect their own seats and expand the political map into states that have previously been difficult territory for the party.

The increasingly competitive environment is forcing both parties to devote money, advertising and campaign resources to races that could determine control of Washington.

Texas Becomes an Unexpected Battleground

One of the most closely watched races is unfolding in Texas.

Republican Ken Paxton is facing Democratic state Rep. James Talarico in a contest that has become significantly more competitive than Republicans might normally expect in the Lone Star State.

An Emerson College Polling/Nexstar Media survey conducted August 9-10 found Paxton receiving support from 47 percent of likely voters.

Talarico received 46 percent.

Another 5 percent of voters were undecided, while 2 percent supported another candidate.

With a credibility interval of approximately three percentage points, the survey showed no clear separation between the two major-party candidates.

Older and Younger Texas Voters Show a Major Divide

The Texas survey also revealed a substantial generational difference among voters.

Likely voters over age 50 favored Paxton by a 53 percent to 42 percent margin.

Voters under 50 moved in the opposite direction, supporting Talarico 53 percent to 38 percent.

Those numbers demonstrate how turnout among different age groups could be an important factor in the Texas contest.

The survey also found the economy and immigration among the major issues influencing Texas voters as Election Day approaches.

Republicans Rally Ahead of November

The tightening Senate battle comes as Republicans focus attention on mobilizing voters for the November elections.

Trump and other prominent Republican officials are expected to play major roles in the party’s effort to maintain congressional control.

For Republicans, the stakes are substantial.

A Republican Senate would allow the Trump administration to continue working with a chamber controlled by the president’s own party.

A Democratic takeover would produce divided government if Republicans retained the White House while losing control of the Senate.

Democrats See New Opportunities

Democrats, meanwhile, are looking beyond traditional battleground states as they search for enough victories to take control of the chamber.

Party leaders have pointed to states including Iowa and Texas as evidence that the Senate battlefield has expanded.

That strategy requires Democrats to compete successfully in states where Republicans have traditionally enjoyed significant advantages.

Whether those opportunities translate into victories will ultimately be decided by voters in November.

The House Could Be Just as Important

The Senate isn’t the only major battle taking place.

Control of the House of Representatives is also at stake, creating the possibility of a major change in Washington regardless of what happens in Senate contests.

For any president, congressional majorities can make an enormous difference.

A Congress controlled by the president’s party can make advancing legislation easier. An opposition-controlled chamber can block legislation, conduct investigations and use committee authority to scrutinize an administration.

That means the 2026 elections could significantly reshape the political environment surrounding Trump’s presidency.

Midterm Elections Could Reshape Washington

Midterm elections often become a referendum on the direction of the country and the performance of the party controlling the White House.

In 2026, the stakes are particularly significant because of the close margins separating Republicans and Democrats in Congress.

The Senate fight is now close enough that individual contests in states such as Texas could have national consequences.

And with Decision Desk HQ’s latest forecast showing an evenly divided outlook for control of the chamber, neither party can treat victory as assured.

What Happens Next

The final stretch of the campaign will likely bring intense attention to competitive Senate races as both parties attempt to motivate supporters and win over undecided voters.

Candidate debates, campaign spending, economic conditions, presidential approval and voter turnout could all influence individual contests.

But the ultimate decision belongs to voters.

When Americans cast their ballots in November, they won’t simply be choosing individual senators and representatives.

Collectively, those decisions will determine who controls Congress — and the political environment President Trump faces for the remainder of his term.
