Voters Demand Revival Of Trump 2017 Plan

Everyone loves this.

A stunning 84% of likely voters back extending President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, according to a newly released poll — as lawmakers in Washington work to finalize legislation that could make the popular tax relief permanent before it expires at the end of this year.

Trump Tax Cuts: Broad Bipartisan Support Among Seniors, Independents, and Middle-Class Americans

In a nationwide survey conducted by Public Opinion Strategies and commissioned by Americans for Prosperity, Republicans (95%), independents (81%), and even Democrats (74%) said they prefer to keep the current tax rates in place. This overwhelming consensus comes as inflation, rising living costs, and economic uncertainty continue to squeeze American families — especially seniors and small business owners.

Seniors, suburban voters, and moderates — all key voting blocs heading into the 2026 midterm elections — favored renewing the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act by margins exceeding 60%, according to the data.

Voters Reject Tax Hikes as Cost of Living Soars

With inflation still a top concern in 2025, it’s no surprise that 80% of voters say now is not the time to raise taxes, up from 76% just months ago. Only 3% believe a tax increase would be good for the country. Meanwhile, 68% of Americans believe they are overtaxed, with many saying that federal income taxes are cutting too deeply into their take-home pay.

The poll also found that nearly three-quarters of respondents fear that allowing Trump’s tax cuts to expire would do the most damage to middle-income families, small business owners, and everyday consumers.

Fiscal Responsibility: Voters Favor Spending Cuts Over Tax Increases

When asked how to best reduce the nearly $2 trillion federal budget deficit, voters responded clearly:

  • 51% support cutting government spending
  • 44% support economic growth to increase revenue
  • Only 5% support raising taxes

Jim Hobart, a polling expert with Public Opinion Strategies, summarized the findings:

“Letting the 2017 tax cuts expire is seen as a direct threat to small businesses, working families, and the American economy. Voters want Congress to act immediately.”

Republicans Move to Make Tax Relief Permanent

House and Senate Republicans are moving fast to pass a bill that would lock in the Trump tax cuts — and expand them. The proposed package includes up to $1.5 trillion in spending reductions, as well as measures to eliminate federal taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security benefits — a huge win for working Americans and retirees alike.

Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) told The Post:

“President Trump’s tax cuts were a lifeline for the middle class. While Democrats are pushing for a $4 billion tax hike, our Republican majority is fighting to protect working Americans.”

Moreno also reaffirmed President Trump’s commitment to protect retirement programs:

“Contrary to Democrat talking points, there will be no cuts to Social Security or Medicare. President Trump has made that absolutely clear.”

A Clear Path Forward: July 4 Deadline Set for Final Vote

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the administration is prioritizing tax reform alongside trade policy and deregulation — the three core pillars of Trump’s economic agenda. “We’re aiming to have the tax bill finalized and signed by the Fourth of July,” Bessent said after a strategy meeting with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD).

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) echoed that goal, stating the House aims to vote on the legislation before the Memorial Day holiday.

Although Democrats have tried to brand the plan as a “giveaway to the wealthy,” Republicans plan to use budget reconciliation to bypass gridlock and pass the bill with a simple majority.
