Ashley Biden, former President Joe Biden’s daughter, has officially moved to end her marriage to Dr. Howard Krein after more than 13 years together, according to filings in a Philadelphia court.
Divorce Papers Filed in Philadelphia
The 44-year-old former first daughter submitted the divorce petition on Monday in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. While the specific reasons for the split remain sealed from public view, the filing comes as the Biden family faces growing personal and political scrutiny.
On the same day, Ashley posted a smiling thumbs-up photo on Instagram while strolling through a park. The post was set to Beyoncé’s Freedom and accompanied by a pointed message:
“Starting a new chapter means setting fresh boundaries and embracing changes that will feel and appear different from the past.”
A Marriage Once Celebrated by Joe Biden
Ashley met Krein, a prominent plastic surgeon, in 2010 through her late brother Beau Biden. The couple became engaged in late 2011 after Krein sought Joe Biden’s blessing, proposing on a cliff in Big Sur, California.
They married in June 2012 at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church in Delaware — the same church where Ashley was baptized — before a guest list of around 200 people. At the time, then–Vice President Biden told the press, “This is the right guy. And he’s getting a helluva woman.”
Biden’s Emotional Wedding Memories
Ashley has occasionally spoken about her wedding in public. At the 2024 Democratic National Convention, she recalled her father personally overseeing the reception setup, riding around in a John Deere 4-wheeler, adjusting place settings, and “getting very emotional.”

At 59, Krein works as both an otolaryngologist and a plastic surgeon with Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia. He and Ashley resided in the city and never had children.
