Democrats refuse to let anything go.
A Democratic lawmaker is attempting to stop President Donald Trump’s plan to renovate one of America’s most famous cultural landmarks — and the legal battle is already drawing national attention.
Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio) filed a lawsuit Friday asking a federal judge to block the temporary closure of the Kennedy Center after President Trump announced plans to renovate and expand the historic venue.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, argues that shutting down the performing arts center could open the door to major structural changes that critics fear might permanently alter the building.
However, the Trump administration says the renovations are necessary to modernize the facility and ensure its long-term success.
Democrats Seek Court Order Against Trump Plan
Beatty’s lawsuit claims the president should not be allowed to close the Kennedy Center without approval from Congress.
According to her filing, the performing arts center could remain closed for as long as two years during renovations, potentially leaving the building empty and inactive.
She warned the court that the Kennedy Center could become what she described as a “lifeless husk” during the extended construction period.
Beatty also argued that the closure could violate federal law that requires the Kennedy Center to be maintained as a “living memorial” honoring former President John F. Kennedy.
Because of that concern, the Democratic congresswoman is asking the court to issue an immediate injunction blocking the closure.
“The Court should not wait until the bulldozers are at the door,” Beatty wrote in the filing.
She requested that the judge prevent the administration from closing the building, canceling scheduled performances, or laying off staff.
Trump Announces Major Renovation Project
President Trump announced last month that the Kennedy Center would temporarily close beginning on July 4 so construction could begin on what he described as a “new and spectacular entertainment complex.”
Trump said the project is fully funded and designed to bring new life to the iconic Washington, D.C. landmark.
“Financing is completed, and fully in place!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform when announcing the plan.
While Beatty suggested the closure could eventually lead to demolition, the administration has not announced any plan to tear down the building.
Instead, the White House says the goal is to upgrade and expand the complex while preserving its historic role as America’s premier performing arts center.
White House Pushes Back Hard
The Trump administration quickly rejected the lawsuit and accused Democrats of neglecting the Kennedy Center for years.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston said the president stepped in to rescue an institution that had struggled financially and culturally.
Huston said in a statement that the newly renamed Trump-Kennedy Center honors President Trump’s significant contributions to the institution.
She said Trump helped stabilize the center’s finances, launch major building upgrades, and remove what she described as divisive political programming.
According to the White House, the renovation project will transform the Kennedy Center into a more welcoming destination for all Americans.
Huston added that, in her view, only extreme Democrats would stand in the way of efforts to improve the Kennedy Center.
A Long-Running Political Dispute
The lawsuit is the latest chapter in an ongoing dispute between Beatty and the Trump administration over the future of the Kennedy Center.
In December, Beatty filed another lawsuit attempting to remove Trump’s name from the facility after it was renamed the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
She argued that the renaming violated constitutional rules governing federal memorials.
Beatty also disputed claims that the Kennedy Center board unanimously approved the name change.
According to the congresswoman, she was on the call during the vote but said her microphone was muted, preventing her from speaking or voting.
She described the situation as “censorship.”
The Future of the Kennedy Center Now in Court
For now, the future of the Kennedy Center renovation project rests in the hands of the federal court system.
President Trump has defended the renovation plan as the fastest way to bring the historic venue to what he called “the highest level of success, beauty, and grandeur.”
Whether the courts will allow the project to move forward remains to be seen.
But one thing is certain: the fight over the Kennedy Center has quickly become another flashpoint in the broader political battle surrounding President Trump’s second term.
