It’s good to see an NFL star come to Trump’s defense for once.
Former NFL star Dez Bryant isn’t buying the narrative that President Donald Trump was somehow responsible for the New York Knicks’ heartbreaking Game 3 loss in the NBA Finals.
After the Knicks fell to the San Antonio Spurs 115-111 at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, some frustrated fans took to social media looking for someone to blame. For many on the left, that target was President Trump, who attended the game and received one of the loudest reactions of the night.
Bryant quickly stepped in to defend the president and mock the critics.
Bryant mocked disappointed Knicks supporters, suggesting their criticism of President Trump had come back to haunt them.
His comment immediately sparked debate online, with thousands weighing in on whether politics had any place in the conversation surrounding the NBA Finals.
Bryant Fires Back At Trump’s Critics
As backlash poured in, Bryant made it clear he wasn’t interested in political arguments.
Bryant fired back at one critic, saying he didn’t care about anyone’s personal feelings toward Trump and suggested they find another way to vent their frustration.
When others accused him of becoming a Trump supporter, Bryant pushed back again.
Bryant also made it clear that politics isn’t something he spends much time thinking about, adding that he wasn’t in a position to judge what Trump does or doesn’t deserve.
The former Dallas Cowboys superstar’s comments quickly went viral, drawing attention from sports fans and political observers alike.
Fans Blame Trump Despite Knicks’ Mistakes
While some critics attempted to pin the loss on Trump’s attendance, the game’s statistics tell a different story.
The Knicks committed 13 costly turnovers and struggled to execute in key moments down the stretch. Meanwhile, the Spurs played a cleaner game, committing just eight turnovers and capitalizing on scoring opportunities when they mattered most.
Interestingly, many critics focused on Trump’s presence while largely ignoring that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was also in attendance.
For Trump supporters, the criticism highlighted what they see as a growing trend of blaming the former president for events completely outside his control.
Knicks Coach Questions Officiating
Following the loss, Knicks head coach Mike Brown pointed to another possible factor: officiating.
Brown acknowledged that San Antonio earned the victory but questioned the massive free-throw disparity between the two teams.
“Coach Mitch Johnson and the Spurs won the game tonight. They came and took the game,” Brown said after the contest.
However, Brown admitted he was surprised by what he witnessed during the second half.
Brown said he was stunned to witness such a large free-throw imbalance on the NBA Finals stage, noting that one team attempted 24 foul shots in the second half while the other managed only eight.
The Spurs finished the game with 32 free-throw attempts compared to New York’s 22, a difference that quickly became a major talking point among fans.
Trump Remains A Lightning Rod
Love him or hate him, President Trump continues to be one of the most talked-about figures in America.
Even at a basketball game, his presence was enough to dominate headlines and spark heated debate across social media.
For Bryant, however, the explanation for the Knicks’ loss was simple: basketball—not politics.
And judging by the box score, many fans may find it difficult to argue otherwise.
