Trump won’t like this one bit.
In recent weeks, the idea of relocating Palestinian civilians from Gaza to neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan has sparked significant controversy. This proposal, initially floated by former President Donald Trump, was met with swift and unequivocal opposition from powerful Arab nations. Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and the Palestinian Authority all joined forces in a statement firmly rejecting any plan to displace Palestinians from their ancestral lands. These countries are standing united against what they see as a dangerous and destabilizing proposal that could further fuel the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Trump had suggested that Egypt and Jordan should absorb Gaza’s population, which had been devastated by months of intense conflict between Israel and Hamas. With Gaza in ruins and over 2 million residents displaced, Trump envisioned a temporary or even long-term resettlement of Palestinians to neighboring countries. He described Gaza as a “demolition site” following Israel’s military strikes aimed at eliminating Hamas infrastructure.
However, this proposal quickly drew condemnation. Leaders from Egypt and Jordan, both of whom have a long history of involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, dismissed it outright. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called such a plan “unacceptable” and reiterated that the only solution to the crisis is the establishment of a Palestinian state. Both Egypt and Jordan have longstanding concerns about the repercussions of absorbing large numbers of Palestinian refugees. These nations already host millions of Palestinians and fear the destabilizing effect on their economies and political systems.
Moreover, the Arab nations emphasized the necessity of a peaceful, two-state solution that includes both Israel and a sovereign Palestinian state. While Trump’s administration had hoped to facilitate a resolution to the conflict, these nations believe that forcing Palestinians out of Gaza is not the answer. They also stressed the critical role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in providing humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees, emphasizing that undermining this agency would only worsen the situation for those already suffering.
This debate is part of a larger ongoing struggle for stability in the region, where the establishment of a Palestinian state remains a core issue. Any solution that seeks to disregard Palestinian rights or forcibly relocate their population will not bring about lasting peace, but instead could deepen divisions and further complicate an already volatile situation. The United States, and the Trump administration in particular, must tread carefully if it hopes to bring any meaningful progress to this long-standing conflict.
