Biden’s getting a taste of his own medicine!
Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft is issuing a warning to potentially exclude President Biden from the election ballot, mirroring efforts in other states seeking to disqualify former President Trump from a second term due to his involvement in the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.
The U.S. Supreme Court is anticipated to make a pivotal decision on whether Trump can be listed on Republican primary ballots in Colorado. This follows a ruling by the state Supreme Court that barred him from the ballots, citing the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause. The decision of the high court aligned with a prior ruling that Trump incited his supporters during the certification of Biden’s 2020 election victory. Notably, the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision marked the first instance in history where Section 3 of the 14th Amendment was invoked to prevent a presidential contender from appearing on the ballot. Similar action has been taken in Maine, where the secretary of state opted to exclude Trump for comparable reasons, a decision currently under appeal.
Expressing his discontent, Ashcroft, a Republican, criticized the initiatives in Colorado and Maine, deeming them “disgraceful” and stating that they “undermine our republic.” He expressed optimism in the Supreme Court overturning the decisions, but asserted that Secretaries of State would intervene to ensure equal application of the new legal standard for both Trump and Biden.
The controversy has sparked widespread criticism from Republicans who argue that attempts to remove Trump from 2024 presidential election ballots undermine the voters’ will. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick even suggested removing Biden from the Texas ballot, citing concerns over his handling of the southern border. A letter submitted to the Supreme Court, supported by over a dozen states, including Missouri, signaled backing for Trump in this matter.
