Here’s what you need to know…

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, is determined to push for a vote on arresting Attorney General Merrick Garland if the Department of Justice (DOJ) does not act on a criminal contempt resolution supported by GOP leaders in the House.

On Tuesday evening, Luna spoke to Fox News Digital, expressing her intention to advance her “inherent contempt” resolution against Garland. This move would follow the full House of Representatives’ decision on a separate measure concerning the Biden administration official.

“We are fully prepared to proceed,” Luna declared. “I lack confidence in the DOJ, and I believe the American public feels the same. Our goal is to restore fairness and demonstrate that accountability should extend to the highest levels.”

She continued, “If the DOJ won’t fulfill their duties, we will step in.”

The concept of inherent contempt is distinct from the contempt resolution scheduled for a vote on Wednesday afternoon. While the latter would recommend criminal charges against Garland to be handled by his own department, inherent contempt, if approved, would instruct the House sergeant at arms to directly arrest Garland.

Luna indicated she would distribute a letter to her colleagues on Wednesday, explaining the concept of inherent contempt and its necessity.

“Inherent contempt of Congress hasn’t been used since the early 1900s. Prior to that, it was a fairly common practice,” Luna explained.

“When people understand what inherent contempt of Congress entails and see that subpoenas are being ignored, revealing a two-tiered justice system—which is becoming increasingly apparent nationally—I believe they will grasp the importance,” she added.

Luna has the ability to compel House leaders to consider her resolution by designating it as “privileged,” which would require the House to address it within two legislative days.

Regarding potential delays or cancellations of the Wednesday vote due to concerns from moderate Republicans, Luna stated she would respect the leadership’s schedule.

“I will await the vote’s outcome according to leadership’s plan for the criminal contempt resolution. Afterward, the timeline for our actions will commence,” she said.

House Republicans seek to hold Garland in contempt for not providing audio recordings of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s interviews with President Biden.

Although most Republicans support this initiative, House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana has a narrow margin for maneuvering with just a two-vote majority.
