This is just crazy at this point.
New York Attorney General Letitia James is once again targeting the Trump administration, this time over the temporary freeze on federal grant programs, a decision that has sparked backlash from both sides of the political aisle. On Tuesday, James announced plans to file a lawsuit against the Trump White House, accusing the administration of overstepping its constitutional bounds.
James, who has a well-documented history of challenging former President Donald Trump, took to social media to express her concern over the freeze, which was implemented on Monday. According to James, the pause on federal funding could harm critical programs that serve communities nationwide. She called the move “reckless and dangerous,” asserting that it would negatively impact families who depend on federal support for essential services.
The freeze, ordered by the White House Office of Management and Budget, applies to most federal grants and loans, potentially affecting trillions of dollars in government spending. However, it excludes direct assistance programs like Social Security, Medicare, and welfare. Despite these exclusions, critics fear the freeze could disrupt vital services in ways that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
Trump’s Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, defended the decision, arguing that it was not a blanket suspension of all federal funding but rather an effort to cut wasteful spending. She specifically highlighted the end of funding for what she called “illegal DEI programs,” as well as the elimination of grants related to the Green New Deal and other left-wing policies. Leavitt reassured the public that programs directly benefiting individuals, such as Social Security and Medicare, would remain unaffected.
While some Democrats, including Senator John Fetterman, have voiced concerns over the freeze’s impact on their states, Leavitt was quick to clarify that no payments would be delayed. “We have confirmed no payments have been affected—they are still being processed,” she said.
This latest battle is another chapter in the ongoing fight over federal spending priorities. Republicans are increasingly questioning the effectiveness of government programs, particularly those they see as promoting “woke” ideologies, while Democrats are pushing back against what they view as dangerous and potentially harmful budget cuts. As both sides prepare for the legal showdown, it remains to be seen how this issue will impact the broader political landscape in the months ahead.
