Cheney is still stunned and it’s hilarious!
Former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney recently ended her long social media silence, sharing a Christmas post on X (formerly Twitter) that sparked renewed controversy. In the post, Cheney shared a photo of her Christmas tree, adding a bracelet reading “democracy” to one of the branches. She also quoted President Abraham Lincoln: “This nation is worth fighting for to secure such an inestimable jewel,” reinforcing her belief in the importance of preserving American ideals.
Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has long been a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump. Despite often voting in line with Trump during his first term, Cheney’s outspoken opposition to him, especially after the January 6 Capitol riot, led to a bitter feud between the two. In 2021, Cheney joined Democrats to vote for Trump’s impeachment over his role in the violence at the Capitol. She later served as vice chairwoman on the House Select Committee that investigated Trump’s involvement in the events surrounding January 6.
After losing her 2022 primary to a pro-Trump challenger, Cheney has remained a vocal critic of Trump, continuing her involvement in the political debate. Most recently, she faced pushback from fellow Republicans who have challenged the credibility of the January 6 Select Committee. An interim report released this week by House Republicans accused Cheney of mishandling witnesses during the investigation and called for an FBI inquiry into her actions. Cheney swiftly responded, calling the report “defamatory” and claiming that no serious legal or political figure would take the allegations seriously.
Cheney’s persistent attacks on Trump and her high-profile role in the January 6 investigation have made her a frequent target of both Trump and his supporters. In response to the interim report, Trump suggested that Cheney could face legal consequences based on the committee’s findings, hinting at the possibility of an FBI investigation into her actions.
As the battle between Cheney and Trump intensifies, it’s clear that her opposition to the former president remains a driving force in her post-congressional career. For many Republicans, Cheney’s refusal to fall in line with the party’s majority views—especially on matters related to Trump and the January 6 events—has cemented her position as a controversial and polarizing figure. Whether or not Cheney’s criticisms will influence the Republican Party moving forward remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: her time in Congress may be over, but her role in shaping the party’s future is far from finished.
