McCarthy Bails On Trump

This is not a good sign.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, expressed his belief on Tuesday that former President Trump has the potential to defeat President Biden in the 2024 election. However, McCarthy also voiced uncertainty about whether Trump is the strongest candidate for the job.

According to Axios, While McCarthy has not officially endorsed any candidate in the crowded Republican race for 2024, he has remained a loyal supporter of Trump, particularly during the former president’s legal challenges.

During an interview with CNBC, McCarthy stated, “Yes, Trump has the capacity to defeat Biden. Trump’s policies are more straightforward and preferable compared to Biden’s policies.”

When questioned about the ongoing investigations involving the former president, McCarthy commented, “Yes, he can win the election. The question is, is he the strongest to win the election? I don’t know that answer.”

Following Trump’s recent indictment on charges related to classified documents, McCarthy, along with some fellow Republicans, criticized the Department of Justice, denouncing what they perceived as an abuse of power. McCarthy expressed his commitment to holding the DOJ accountable in a tweet earlier this month.

As of now, the expanding field of Republican candidates for the 2024 election includes Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson.
