Where’s Newsom going?
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing new questions about his work schedule after previously undisclosed calendars revealed numerous weekdays with no official business listed — just as the Democrat continues making high-profile political trips outside his home state.
The records have provided fresh ammunition to Newsom’s Republican critics, who argue the governor is spending too much time building a national political profile while California continues dealing with major challenges involving housing, homelessness, the state budget and the cost of living.
Newsom’s office strongly disputes that characterization and says the calendars do not provide a complete record of the governor’s daily work.
Still, with Newsom widely viewed as a possible 2028 presidential contender, the combination of blank spaces on his official calendar and frequent travel is attracting attention.
Newsom’s Calendar Raises Questions
The controversy erupted after the California Post obtained calendars detailing Newsom’s schedule during the first several months of 2026.
According to the records, 18 non-holiday weekdays during the first four months of the year listed no official government business.
The calendars also showed a number of relatively light scheduled workdays, with some beginning after 9 a.m. and concluding before 5 p.m.
Newsom’s office maintains that those records should not be interpreted as proof that the governor was not working.
Officials say the calendars primarily contain meetings and events scheduled ahead of time and therefore do not capture every phone call, conversation, decision or other activity performed by the governor.
That distinction is important: A calendar containing no scheduled official events does not necessarily mean Newsom performed no government work that day.
Nevertheless, the disclosure comes at a politically difficult time for a governor who has been spending considerable time outside California.
Michigan Trip Draws Fresh Scrutiny
Newsom traveled to Michigan over the weekend for a multiday political swing through one of America’s most closely watched battleground states.
The California Democrat met with party officials, activists and Black faith leaders while campaigning on behalf of Democrats hoping to gain political ground in Michigan.
Newsom was also scheduled to meet with Abdul El-Sayed, the progressive Democratic Senate nominee who emerged from a closely contested primary.
Newsom’s political operation portrays the governor’s national involvement as part of a larger effort to help Democrats win elections and counter President Donald Trump’s agenda in Washington.
Republicans see another explanation.
They argue Newsom is effectively laying the groundwork for a possible presidential campaign in 2028.
Newsom has not formally announced a White House bid.
Republican Rival Blasts Newsom
Steve Hilton, the Republican candidate for California governor in the November runoff, seized on the calendar revelations and accused Newsom of putting his national political ambitions ahead of his responsibilities in Sacramento.
Hilton called the situation a “massive insult” to Californians and portrayed Newsom as a governor increasingly focused on becoming president.
He also pointed to California’s struggles with homelessness, affordability, unemployment and the departure of some residents and businesses as evidence that Newsom should be concentrating more heavily on problems at home.
Those claims represent Hilton’s political assessment of Newsom’s record, which the governor and his allies strongly dispute.
But Hilton’s argument could resonate with conservative voters who have long criticized California’s direction under Democratic leadership.
Even A Democrat Takes A Swipe
Newsom didn’t face criticism exclusively from Republicans.
Democratic political consultant Steve Maviglio took a public shot at the governor’s political operation after Newsom’s team celebrated generating approximately 1 million social-media views through digital creators and independent media.
Maviglio questioned why similar energy wasn’t being directed toward problems such as homelessness, housing and California’s budget situation.
The criticism underscores the potential political risk Newsom faces as his national profile expands.
Every trip outside California gives opponents another opportunity to ask whether his attention remains focused on the state he was elected to govern.
Questions Raised About Taxpayer-Funded Staff
Lance Christensen, vice president of the California Policy Center, raised another concern surrounding Newsom’s Michigan activities.
Christensen accused taxpayer-funded members of Newsom’s gubernatorial staff of promoting what he characterized as presidential campaign activity in Michigan.
He sarcastically remarked that he didn’t realize Newsom was the governor of Michigan.
The criticism raises a broader question likely to follow Newsom as speculation about 2028 intensifies: How should the public distinguish between his official responsibilities as California governor and his increasingly prominent role in national Democratic politics?
Newsom has not announced a presidential campaign, making descriptions of his current travel as presidential campaigning a matter of political interpretation rather than an established fact.
Newsom’s Office Pushes Back
Newsom’s office has rejected the criticism in forceful terms.
Spokesperson Izzy Gardon said the administration does not consider attacks from California Republicans and other critics credible and insisted Newsom continues performing his duties as governor.
The governor’s team also argues that helping Democrats win congressional elections serves California’s interests because a Democratic majority in Washington could provide a stronger counterweight to Trump’s policies.
Newsom’s office further maintains that critics are drawing inaccurate conclusions from calendars that were never intended to document every minute of the governor’s working day.
That defense, however, hasn’t stopped Republicans from making the records an issue.
Newsom Has Been Traveling Frequently
The calendar controversy is receiving additional attention because of Newsom’s extensive travel.
His trips this year have reportedly included stops in Davos, Munich and London, along with appearances around the United States connected to the promotion of his memoir.
Newsom’s willingness to appear on the national stage has fueled years of speculation about his presidential ambitions.
With his time as governor approaching its end, those questions are only becoming louder.
Nick Poche, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee, offered a particularly harsh assessment of Newsom’s national ambitions.
Poche attacked the governor’s record and argued that Democratic candidates who welcome Newsom into their states risk associating themselves with the policies California Republicans have spent years opposing.
Newsom and his supporters, meanwhile, portray California as a powerful Democratic counterweight to the Trump administration and argue that the governor has every reason to participate in national political battles.
Is Newsom Already Looking Toward 2028?
That may ultimately be the biggest political question surrounding the calendar controversy.
Newsom is approaching the end of his tenure as California governor, and he cannot seek another consecutive term because of the state’s term limits.
He has not formally entered the 2028 presidential race.
But his national travel, political appearances, media interviews and involvement in elections far beyond California have ensured that speculation isn’t going away.
For Republicans, the newly disclosed calendars offer an opportunity to portray Newsom as a governor more interested in Washington than Sacramento.
For Newsom, the challenge will be convincing Californians that he can play an increasingly prominent role in national politics without neglecting the responsibilities of his current job.
The calendars alone don’t prove Newsom wasn’t working on days without scheduled official business.
But politically, they have given his opponents something potentially more valuable: a new way to question where the governor’s attention is focused as the 2028 presidential race draws closer.
