Ocasio-Cortez Declares War On Trump’s ICE

AOC is in for a rude awaking.

Residents of the Bronx are pushing back against a plan to create a more than 2,000-bed man-only illegal housing system in their borough, despite support from state leaders like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who has been an advocate for welcoming more illegals. The community’s opposition centers on concerns over how such a facility will impact the area, from increased strain on local resources to a potential rise in crime.

Christopher Reid, a leader of the NY Young GOP Club’s Bronx Caucus, criticized Ocasio-Cortez for not listening to her constituents, noting that residents in the affected neighborhoods are strongly against the plan. According to Reid, the people who live in these areas have not been consulted and do not want this shelter in their community.

Protests have already taken place outside the site of the planned shelter in the South Bronx, with residents voicing their dissatisfaction with the decision. Many are worried that the shelter will lead to further destabilization of their neighborhoods, especially as the city moves forward with a larger plan to consolidate immigrant housing. This plan involves closing down 46 smaller shelters and reducing the number of available beds for illegals, causing concerns over the city’s strategy for managing the influx of asylum seekers.

While city officials insist the shelter will be temporary and have security measures in place, many local residents feel that they are being ignored in the decision-making process. Some lawmakers, including Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.), have argued that the Bronx is being unfairly burdened, treating it as a “dumping ground” for migrants.

Ocasio-Cortez, who represents the district where the shelter would be located, has been an outspoken advocate for the city’s migrant policies. Her office recently hosted an event to inform undocumented migrants about their rights when interacting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). However, critics argue that her actions don’t show genuine concern for her community, especially when she failed to attend the event herself.

This growing discontent appears to be shifting political attitudes in the area. In the 2024 election, support for President Donald Trump in New York City, particularly in the Bronx and Queens, saw a notable increase compared to 2020. Many local voters are now turning to the America-first philosophy, which focuses on putting the needs of American citizens first. Reid and the New York Young Republican Bronx Caucus aim to channel this growing support into local politics, prioritizing the needs of the Bronx, Staten Island, and Queens over broader national or international concerns.

For many in the Bronx, the message is clear: local concerns must be addressed first, and community members should have a say in decisions that impact their neighborhoods.
