In exchange, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners and allow Palestinians to return to their homes in Gaza. Humanitarian aid will also begin flowing into the region.
The second phase, Biden explained, will focus on reaching a permanent end to the conflict. If negotiations extend beyond the initial six weeks, the ceasefire will continue until a permanent resolution is found. In the final phase, any deceased hostages will be returned to their families, and reconstruction efforts in Gaza will commence.
This ceasefire agreement is the result of intense diplomatic efforts, including mediation by Qatari negotiators and support from Egyptian intermediaries. The Biden administration, while facilitating the deal, was closely followed by President-elect Donald Trump, who praised the negotiations. Trump highlighted that this agreement was a testament to America’s leadership in securing peace, particularly after his historic victory in November.
The hostages’ return and the prospect of a more stable region were also welcomed by Trump. His administration’s focus on securing peace through strength, exemplified by the Abraham Accords, has set the stage for a more lasting resolution in the Middle East. Trump expressed his confidence that the deal would pave the way for greater stability in the region and reiterated that this was just the beginning of more positive outcomes for both the U.S. and its allies.
