Top Texas Republican Backstabs Trump, Helps Democrats

This isn’t a good idea.

A major Republican showdown is erupting in Texas as Sen. John Cornyn is facing backlash from conservatives after refusing to clearly say he would support Trump-endorsed Attorney General Ken Paxton if Paxton wins the upcoming Senate runoff.

The comments immediately sparked frustration among many MAGA supporters, who see President Donald Trump’s endorsement as the clearest signal possible for Republican voters heading into one of the biggest races of the year.

During an appearance on NewsNation’s “The Hill Sunday,” Cornyn was asked directly whether he would back Paxton if the attorney general becomes the Republican nominee against Democrat James Talarico in November.

Instead of giving a direct answer, Cornyn sidestepped the question and insisted he expects to win the nomination himself.

“I expect to be the nominee of the party,” Cornyn said, brushing aside speculation about supporting Paxton in the general election.

The longtime Texas senator also described the heated Republican primary as a “family fight,” while attempting to reassure voters that Republicans ultimately need to stay united to defeat Democrats in November.

Still, many conservatives were not convinced.

Cornyn’s relationship with the Trump movement has been strained for years. In 2023, the Texas senator publicly suggested that Trump’s political “time had passed him by,” a comment that angered many loyal supporters of the president.

Now, with Trump officially backing Paxton, old tensions inside the Republican Party are exploding back into the spotlight.

Cornyn defended his record by arguing that he generally supports Trump’s agenda while occasionally disagreeing with the president on certain issues. He claimed Republicans must carefully navigate difficult political battles ahead of the midterm elections if they want to protect conservative gains during Trump’s final years in office.

But Paxton and many grassroots conservatives argue the problem goes much deeper.

Paxton has repeatedly questioned Cornyn’s loyalty to the America First movement, especially after the senator supported bipartisan gun legislation following the tragic 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

That vote remains highly controversial among many Republican voters in the state.

Trump made his own feelings clear earlier this week when he officially endorsed Paxton in the race.

While Trump described Cornyn as a “good man,” the president strongly praised Paxton as a “true MAGA Warrior” who has consistently fought for conservative values and stood by the America First movement.

Trump also pointed out that Cornyn was slow to support him during his presidential campaign, suggesting the senator failed to fully stand behind the movement when it mattered most.

In a Truth Social post, Trump praised Paxton as a fighter who has survived years of political attacks while continuing to battle for conservative priorities.

The Texas Senate race is now becoming one of the most important Republican battles in the country — and many conservatives believe it could determine just how powerful Trump’s influence remains inside the GOP heading into the future.

For Republican voters across Texas, the choice is becoming increasingly clear: establishment politics or the America First movement that continues to dominate the conservative base.
