Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna is raising serious questions about how justice is applied in Washington, arguing that ordinary Americans often face tougher consequences than powerful political insiders.
Speaking on Newsmax Thursday night, Luna criticized the Department of Justice for what she described as uneven enforcement priorities. Her comments came after federal authorities charged a U.S. Army soldier accused of improperly using sensitive information tied to the January operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
According to prosecutors, the service member allegedly used advance knowledge connected to the mission to place wagers on a prediction market, generating more than $400,000 in profits. If convicted, he could face significant penalties.
Luna said wrongdoing should be punished, but she questioned why lawmakers in Washington rarely receive the same level of scrutiny when ethical concerns arise.
She pointed specifically to ongoing public frustration over congressional stock trading and repeated calls for stronger accountability rules. Many voters, especially conservatives, have long supported legislation that would ban members of Congress from trading individual stocks while in office.
Luna said Americans are losing confidence in a system that appears tougher on military personnel and private citizens than on career politicians.
She also warned that trust in government continues to erode when voters see repeated ethics controversies in Washington without meaningful consequences.
The Florida congresswoman said she plans to advocate for fairness in the soldier’s case if he is convicted, including repayment of profits rather than life-destroying punishment.
Her remarks are likely to resonate with many supporters of President Donald Trump, who have consistently pushed for government reform, equal justice, and stronger accountability for political elites.
As the 2026 election season approaches, issues like DOJ oversight, congressional transparency, and restoring trust in federal institutions could become major priorities for Republican voters.
