Here’s what happened.
President Donald Trump unveiled a massive new presidential aircraft Friday, marking what could be the beginning of the end for the aging Air Force One fleet that has served American presidents for decades.
Standing before military personnel and Air Force leaders at Joint Base Andrews, Trump showcased the newly refurbished Boeing 747-8 and made it clear that he believes America deserves a presidential aircraft that reflects the nation’s power and prestige.
According to Trump, the difference is impossible to miss.
“The biggest difference is the size,” Trump said. “It’s virtually double the size.”
The jet is slated to operate as a temporary Air Force One while Boeing completes development of the next-generation presidential fleet, a program that has been hampered by repeated delays and escalating expenses.
Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with those delays, arguing that the United States should not be forced to rely on aircraft that are increasingly outdated while other world leaders travel aboard newer, more advanced planes.
According to Trump, he asked the Emir about obtaining access to the newer 747, pointing out that the plane had been used only sparingly before changing hands.
The president said America must project strength wherever its leader travels.
“Our country has to be represented properly,” Trump added.
One of the most noticeable changes is the aircraft’s striking red, white, and dark blue exterior. The design reflects Trump’s preferred color scheme and replaces the light-blue look that has been associated with Air Force One since the Kennedy administration.
Earlier this year, Air Force officials confirmed that the updated design will eventually become the standard appearance for future presidential aircraft.
The Pentagon has spent months preparing the aircraft for presidential service, and Air Force officials say the jet will soon begin commissioning flights before entering active operation.
Air Force Secretary Troy Meink stressed that every modification has been made with presidential security as the top priority.
“The safety and security of the commander in chief is our highest priority,” Meink said.
Trump also praised the aircraft’s interior, describing it as one of the most luxurious airplanes in the world. Officials say the aircraft required fewer modifications than Boeing’s delayed replacement program, allowing it to move toward service much faster.

The president suggested Americans may get an early look at the aircraft during next year’s America 250 celebration.
Trump predicted the jet could lead a spectacular Independence Day flyover over Washington, D.C., accompanied by some of the nation’s most advanced military aircraft.
He said the event could feature fighter jets including the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, along with other aircraft representing every branch of the U.S. military.
“It will be a flyover like no flyover,” Trump said.
The aircraft is expected to serve as a temporary solution until Boeing completes and delivers the two next-generation Air Force One planes, which remain about two years from entering service.
Trump concluded by thanking the more than 250 military and civilian personnel who helped prepare the aircraft for service.
For supporters, the unveiling represents more than a new airplane. It is another step toward modernizing America’s presidential fleet and ensuring the United States is represented by aircraft that match its position as the world’s leading superpower.
As Boeing continues to struggle with delays, Trump’s newly upgraded presidential jet may soon become one of the most recognizable symbols of his effort to restore what he calls American strength, pride, and prestige on the world stage.
