Here’s what conservatives need to know.

As Inauguration Day approaches, security concerns are at the forefront for law enforcement officials in Washington, D.C. U.S. Capitol Police have identified “the biggest threat” as individuals who may attempt to carry out violent acts. In light of recent history and the heightened threat environment, security measures for the January 20 event are being ramped up to unprecedented levels.

The Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, remains a stark reminder of the risks associated with politically charged events. The violent actions of Trump supporters attempting to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential victory left an indelible mark on the nation. Since then, political figures, including former President Donald Trump, have been targeted by violent extremists.

Trump himself has faced multiple assassination attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign. In July, a would-be assassin opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injuring the former president and killing an innocent bystander. Then, in September, an armed man was arrested near Trump’s golf club, with authorities believing he had planned to shoot the president. These chilling incidents underscore the gravity of the security challenges facing the nation as Inauguration Day draws near.

Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger highlighted the primary concern as “lone actors” — individuals acting alone to carry out violent acts. Just recently, two such individuals attempted to disrupt proceedings at a Capitol event honoring former President Jimmy Carter. One suspect tried to bring knives and a machete, while the other attempted to set a car on fire. Thankfully, law enforcement was able to prevent these threats from escalating.

In response, security for the inauguration will be extensive. The Secret Service plans to deploy over 30 miles of fencing, security checkpoints, and drones to ensure safety. Additionally, the District of Columbia National Guard will provide 7,800 soldiers for perimeter security and other duties, including controlling traffic and patrolling Metro stations.

With an expected 250,000 ticketed attendees, in addition to demonstrators, the scale of security operations is massive. Federal agencies, including the FBI, will be involved in monitoring potential threats, although no specific credible threats have been identified at this time. Despite this, law enforcement officials remain vigilant, aware that lone actors remain a persistent and unpredictable danger.

This intense security effort comes after criticism of the Secret Service for its handling of previous incidents, including the assassination attempts on Trump and controversies related to the January 6 Capitol breach. Public trust in the agency has declined in recent years, yet the Secret Service remains the lead agency overseeing this high-security event, with thousands of federal agents and local police supporting their efforts.

As we approach Inauguration Day, it’s clear that the security landscape has changed significantly. The protection of American leaders and the preservation of our democratic processes have never been more important. The need for effective security is paramount, and law enforcement’s heightened vigilance reflects the ongoing threats we face.
