The upcoming Trump Administration is not playing around.
America First Legal (AFL), a conservative legal group with close ties to President Donald Trump, has sent warning letters to several mayors and officials in sanctuary cities across the United States, urging them to reconsider their defiance of federal immigration law. The group, which aims to protect American sovereignty and uphold the Constitution, has identified the growing trend of local governments obstructing federal immigration enforcement as a serious threat to the rule of law.
Among the recipients of these letters are prominent figures such as Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, San Diego County Supervisor Nora Vargas, and California Attorney General Rob Bonta. These officials have been accused of supporting policies that shield illegal immigrants from federal authorities and hinder the enforcement of immigration laws.
The letter, dated December 23, was signed by James Rogers, senior counsel at America First Legal. It made it clear that federal law mandates the removal of individuals unlawfully present in the United States and prohibits the harboring or shielding of illegal immigrants. It also highlighted the legal risks associated with obstructing federal enforcement, warning that those involved in sanctuary policies could face criminal prosecution and civil liability.
Stephen Miller, President of AFL, is a key figure in this effort. A former senior adviser to President Trump and the designated deputy chief of staff for policy in the incoming administration, Miller has been outspoken about the dangers of sanctuary cities and their disregard for national immigration laws. He reiterated the need for local governments to cooperate with federal authorities to ensure the safety and security of American citizens.
The letter is a direct response to efforts by Democratic governors and mayors, such as Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Colorado Governor Jared Polis, who have vowed to resist the Trump administration’s immigration policies. In some cases, local officials have even threatened to use force to block federal immigration actions, invoking comparisons to major historical events like the Tiananmen Square protests.
The warning from America First Legal is clear: sanctuary cities not only undermine federal law but also expose themselves to significant legal and financial consequences. As the letter concludes with a quote from President Theodore Roosevelt, “Obedience to the law is demanded as a right; not asked as a favor.” It’s time for sanctuary city officials to decide whether they will uphold the law or face the consequences of their actions.
