A proposal from the Trump administration could lead to one of America’s most recognizable transportation hubs receiving a new name.
According to a letter obtained by the New York Daily News, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy directed Amtrak to begin exploring the renaming of New York Penn Station as part of a broader list of transportation priorities. While the document does not specify a replacement name, the move has fueled renewed speculation that President Donald Trump’s name could eventually be attached to the iconic station.
If approved, the change would instantly become one of the most talked-about transportation decisions in recent years.
Trump Name Proposal Returns To The Spotlight
The possibility of renaming Penn Station has surfaced before.
Earlier this year, reports claimed President Trump discussed the idea during negotiations involving approximately $16 billion in federal funding for the Gateway rail tunnel project connecting New York and New Jersey.
Those reports alleged Trump wanted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to support renaming both New York Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport after him.
The Trump administration had temporarily frozen funding for the tunnel project during the 2025 government shutdown before a federal court later ordered the money restored.
Trump has consistently denied making any demand tied to the funding.
Writing on Truth Social, the president said the idea of naming Penn Station after him originated with politicians and construction union leaders rather than from his administration. He also dismissed reports suggesting otherwise as “fake news” and argued the proposal would not increase construction costs.
Palm Beach Airport Already Bears Trump’s Name
Although the future of New York Penn Station remains uncertain, Trump recently celebrated another naming victory.
Earlier this month, Florida officially renamed Palm Beach International Airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport, making it one of the nation’s highest-profile transportation facilities to carry the president’s name.
Trump praised the decision on Truth Social, calling Palm Beach “a special place” while sharing a newspaper front page highlighting the airport’s official renaming ceremony.
The move drew national attention and renewed discussion about whether other public facilities could eventually receive similar treatment.
Can Penn Station Actually Be Renamed?
For now, no final decision has been announced.
Sean Duffy’s letter indicates federal officials are exploring the possibility, but any permanent name change for New York Penn Station would likely face political debate and additional administrative steps before becoming reality.
Supporters argue the proposal would recognize Trump’s influence on American politics and transportation infrastructure, while critics are expected to oppose changing the name of one of the nation’s busiest rail terminals.
